A. MITCHELL EXTENSIBLE ENVELOP.

WITNESSES (No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANNE MITCHELL, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
EXTENSIBLE ENVELOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of- Letters Patent No. 596,435, dated December 28, 1897.
Application filed July 30, 1897.
T aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNE MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have made a new and useful Improvement in Extensible Envelops; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs,-and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to envelops which may be enlarged in length, so as to fit cards or papers of varying lengths, thus obviating the necessity of a stationer carrying so great a diversity of sizes of envelops, and, further, in so constructing an envelop of this class that it may be either a closed package or an open package in the manner prescribed by the postal law Without a detraction from its func-' tions in either condition.
The invention consists in the device hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of the envelop proper. Fig. 2 is a View of the wrapper unfolded, and Fig. 3 is a view of same folded as for insertion. Fig. 4 is a view of this device slightly extended in one dimen sion and sealed as when for a closed package. Fig. 5 is a like view showing same sealed as when for an open package.
In the figures like reference-characters are uniformly employed in the designation of corresponding elements of construction in all the views.
A is the envelop proper, which consists of a receptacle a, provided with a flap a, which has a gummed portion a thereon.-
B is the wrapper, which is provided with flaps b and 1), adapted to fold over on the main portion 12 along the lines 19 and b respectively. As shown in Fig. 3, this wrapper, when Serial No. 646,554. (No model.)
folded, has the flaps b folded down upon the main portion b and over these flaps is folded the flap 1). In inclosi'nga card the same is laid upon the portion 19 and the flaps b folded over it, the flap I) being folded down upon these flaps, as just described.
Now when the wrapper B is inserted in the envelop proper, A, so that the gummed side of the flap a lies against the outer side of the flap b and is sealed to said flap b the wrapper cannot be withdrawn from the envelop A on account of the fact that the flaps b are folded around the card. Neither can the flaps b be withdrawn. But when the wrapper B is placed in the envelop so that this gummed flap. a, lies against and is adhered to the back of the main portion 11 of the wrapper the flap 1) may be manually withdrawn and the contents of the envelop examined by the postal authorities, the flap I) being of sufficient length, however, to prevent its accidental withdrawal. In the first instance just named the contents of the envelop cannot be tampered with, and come under the postal laws as to first-class matter, while in the latter case named thepackage comes under the sections of the postal law relating to unsealed packages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In an extensible envelop, an envelop proper and a wrapper having flaps on three of its edges adapted to fold over the central portion, and the part so formed adapted to be inserted in said envelop proper with either the central portion'or the flaps toward the front of the envelop proper, and a flap on said envelop proper adapted to be adhered to said wrapper, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANNE MITCHELL.
