H THIER BUTTON FASTENER.
Patented Nov. 27, 1894.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMANN THIER, OF KGNIGSTEIN, GERMANY.
BUTTON-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,974, dated November 27, 1 894.
' Application filed May 31,1894. Serial No. 513,057. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERMANN ,THIER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Konigstein-on-the-Elbe, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for fastening buttons on articles of clothing by hand.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient fastener adapted to be readily applied and operated for the purpose of firmly securing buttons to garments, and my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:Figure 1 is a plan view of the clincher a, before the prongs thereof have been bent into position. Fig. 2 is a side view of said clincher after its prongs have been bent into operative position. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the slotted plate d. Fig. 4 represents vertical sections of said plate d, taken at right angles to each other. Fig. 5 is a side view of the wings or branches 6. Fig. 6 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 7 is a plan View of the plate d, and the wings e. Fig. 8 is a vertical section thereof.- Fig. 9 is a vertical sectional elevation showing the manner of applying the fastener, and before the prongs of the clincher a have been bent down. Fig. 10 is a similar view showing the prongs of the clincher a, and the wings e, in their bent position.
In order to fasten, by means of this device, the usual bone, horn, metal, and other buttons, which are generally provided with four holes by which they are sewed on garments, a four-armed clincher or hold-fast a is employed, on which the button I) is slipped. The points of the clincher or hold-fast are pushed through the material 0 of the garment, so that they project on the under or inner side. For the purpose of bending the said points back and securing them in that position, a protecting cover is applied which consists of a slotted plate d and two wings or branches 6, the latter having bearing portions e which seat upon the upper face of the plate (1. This is so fitted on to the projecting points of the clincher or hold-fast a by passing them through the slot, that each pair of points is brought into juxtaposition with one of .the said wings. The wings e are then bent away from each other by hand so as to be quite flat, whereby the points are also bent back therewith and are held in that position by the flattened wing.
l/Vhen' it is desired to detach the button, the wings are bent back into their original upright position, and then the clincher with the button can be drawn out of the material.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent The herein described fastener comprising the clincher at, having prongs adapted to pass through the openings of a button, a plate d, having a slot through which the said prongs are adapted to pass, the wings or branches e, of a U-shape and provided with bearing portions 6 seated upon the upper edge of the plate d, and said wings or branches being arranged to occupy a position between the prongs of clincher a, and adapted to be bent away from each other to cause the said prongs to be likewise bent and secured in a clinched position, as described.
Intestimony thatI claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
HERMANN THIER.
