UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD J. POWELL AND WILLIAM F. NOLAN, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNORS TO THEMSELVES, PHILIP BAUM, AND HERMAN LOWENTHAL, OF SAMEILAOE, AND SOLOMON DENZER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FASTENlNG FOR ATTACHING BUTTONS TO GARMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,195, dated March 2, 1886.
Application filed November 12, 1885. Serial No. 182,537. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Brennan J. POWELL and WILLIAM F. NOLAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Attaching Buttons to Garments, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in the means of attaching buttons to garments, and is an improvement upon our device for which we obtained Letters Patent bearing date the 14th day of July, 1885, and numbered The object of the invention is to attach buttons to garments in an expeditious and more durable manner than has heretofore been accomplished by hand or by needle and thread, and is intended to be used in connection with our machine, adapted to this kind of fastening, for which we have secured Letters Patent bearing date the 19th of May, 1885, and numbered 318,024, and with a machine of a similar nature, for which we are also intending to apply for Letters Patent. These objects are attained by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view showing a button attached to a piece of cloth by means of this fastening. Fig. 2 shows the back of the piece of cloth and the bottom of the staple used for this pur- 3 5 pose. Fig. 3 shows a detached view of the staple before it has been applied to a button. Fig. at is a detached View of the bottom of the staple. Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the cloth and button on the line w 00 of Fig. 1.
of, and E the base or bottom, which, it will be observed, is made of a single piece of wire bent in the form approximating a double 8, which, it will also be observed, gives a wider surface or bearing than our original invention or device, and more effectually prevents cutting the cloth, and as the points of the staple pass through two of the holes in the button, and are then bent over and enter the opposite holes, they fill all the holes of a four-holed button and form two loops, which allow the button considerable play or flexibility after the button has been fastened by this device to the cloth, and thereby also allow the button to work and twist without the possibility of breaking the fastening. In the same manner the fastening may be also used with a twoholed button.
Having described our invention, what we desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is- A button-fastener consisting of a staple, 0, having points D, and a base, E, in form approximating a double letter S, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
RIOHARDJ. POWELL. WILLIAM F. NOLAN.
