EDWIN O. READ, OF NEVV'YORK, N. Y.
DEVICE FOR PROTECTING JOINTS OF WINDOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,838, dated November 27, 1894. A lication filed December '7, 1893- Serial No. 492,985. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Y'
Be it known that I, EDWIN O. READfa citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Devices for Protecting the Joints of Windows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements devices for protecting the joints of windows, doors, or other appliances which have a joint or seam between the moving parts; and it is especially the purpose of the invention to combine a catch or fastening with a guard or protection for the joint, which will prevent the introduction of a tool through the joint to surreptitiously open the catch.
In effect my device consists of a continuous hinge, extending the entire length of the joint, so that there shall not be any interval between knuckles (as there might be if the hinge were not continuous) where an opening would be left, or the hinge weakened between the knuckles. This continuous hinge is further strengthened by furnishing one leaf (the one which is secured to one of the sashes) withan under lapping tongue or shoulder, and furnishing the other leaf with a corresponding tongue or shoulder arranged to abut against and make a close fit with the said first named tongue. In this manner the opening between the two sashes, or between the door and the jamb, is eifectually guarded, so that it is impossible to insert a tool to get at the catch.
Referring to the drawings which accompany the specification to aid the description, Figure 1 is a vertical section, partly broken, of my device as applied to a Window, the hinge being shown open. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the device, showing the position of the hinge when closed over the joint between the two sashes. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the entire hinge, when closed. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the device entire.
The device consists of a continuous hinge, formed with leaves A, B, and a continuous series of knuckles a, b, the leaves and series of knuckles extending the width of the window, 1) being the pintle.
I prefer to screw leaf A to the upper sash O, and said leaf A is provided with a tongue a which projects beneath the knuckles, about as shown in Fig.1 and extends the length of the leaf A. In setting the device this tongue a is placed so as to be adjacent to but a little back from the jointj between the upper and lower Window sashes and also so as to permit the lower sash to be raised. Said leaf B is provided with a rabbet b which extends the entire length of the leaf B and has a continuous shoulder b, said rabbet I) being so situated that the tongue 0. will enter said rabbet and abut against the shoulder b when the leaves are in the locked position Fig. 2. Thus it will be seen that the solid metal of the leaf 13 covers the joint between the sashes O0, throughout the entire length of the oint, when the hinge is in the locked position of Fig. 2, that the joint between the tonguea' and shoulder b is inaccessible from the oint between the sashes, and that the knuckles of the hinge are protected by the said tongue a and the metal of the leaf B.
To facilitate raising the leafiB for opening the window, finger pieces E 'are provided.
D D are catches shaped, as shown in Fig. 2, and pivoted by means of the shoulder screws d to the plates e e, which are screwed flush to the top of the inner sash B.
To look the window the leaf B is turned flat upon the top of the sash C, audthe catches D D are then turned to the position of Fig. 2. The window is. now locked. To .open it, the catches D D are turned off the leaf B, as indicated in Fig. 1 by the solid lines, said leaf B is turned up and clear of the joint j, and then the lower sash is raised.
It will be understood thatI am not restricted to the catch D or finger piece E that are shown in the drawings. Any other suitable catches and finger pieces may be used without departing from my invention.
Now, having described my improvement, I claim as my invention 1. A protector for windows, doors and similar appliances, consisting of twoleaves united by a continuous hinge, and one of said leaves being provided with a continuous tongue which projects beneath the extent of said hinge and the other of said leaves being provided with a continuous rabbet adapted to receive said tongue and with a continuous shoulder adapted to abut against saidtongue when the leaves are in the locked position, substantially as described.
2. A protector for windows, doors and similar appliances, consisting of a leaf A provided with a continuous series of knuckles and with a continuous tongue at which projects beneath the extent of said knuckles, and said leaf A adapted to be screwed to one member of the window, door or similar appliance, a leaf B, also provided with a corresponding continuous series of knuckles and with a continuous rabbet b and a continuous shoulder 19 adapted to abut against the aforesaid tongue, and finger pieces on said leaf B and a catch to engage on said leaf, substantially as described.
3. A protector for windows, doors and similar appliances, consisting of a leaf adapted to extend parallel to the entire length of the joint and a little back therefrom and provided with a tongue which projects beneath the hinge of the protector, and of another leaf hinged to the first named leaf and being provided with a rabbet adapted to receive said tongue and with a shoulder to abut against the tongue, whereby the metal of said last named leaf covers the aforesaid joint throughout its'extent when the leaves are locked, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my'narne, in presence of two Witnesses, this 21st day of November, 1893.
