To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved sash lock and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character which is entirely automatic in its operation and will positively lock the upper and lower sashes of a window in closed position and against movement with respect to each other.
The invention has for another important object to provide a lock of the above character, one of the parts of which is so constructed that it is impossible for a would-be intruder to insert an implement between the sashes and manipulate the look so that the window could be opened.
The invention has for another and more particular object to provide a lock of the above character including a base plate adapted to be fixed. to the rail of the lower sash and having a guard flange extension, a locking plate pivoted upon the base plate and movable by gravity to its normal position against the face of the upper sash stile, and a series of abutments on the upper sash for engagement by the locking plate to prevent or limit the downward movement of said sash.
It is another general object of the invention to improve and simplify devices of the above character, eliminating the use of springs or other easily breakable elements so that the lock will be very durable and serviceable in practical use.
lVith the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

designates the lower window sash and 6 the upper sash. Upon the top of the meeting rail 7 of the lower sash, a base plate 8 is secured by means of the screws indicated at 9. This plate is shown in blank in Fig. 3 of the drawing, and the same is of elongated rectangular form and provided with a rectangular opening 11. This end of the plate wherein-the opening is formed, is bent upon itself to provide knuckles 12 at opposite sides of the opening 11, said plate being extended from the knuckles and the end portion thereof bent to form a curved guard flange 13, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
The locking plate, indicated at 14, is also of rectangular form and the blank thereof, shown in F ig. l, is provided upon one end with a reduced longitudinally projecting tongue 15. This tongue is bent or curled around the medial portion of a pintle 16 and tightly crimped thereon. The projecting end portions of the pintle are loosely engaged in the spaced knuckles 12 on the base plate 8, the curved tongue 15 of the locking plate being accommodated in the opening 11 of the base plate.
From the above, it will be seen that the locking plate 14 projects upwardly, and normally the free edge of this plate rests against the inner face of the adjacent vertical stile of the upper sash 6. To the locking plate, one end of a rod or other suitable finger piece 17 is permanently fixed. This rod is angularly offset, as at 18, and the free terminal end 19 thereof is normally spaced above the base plate 8.
Upon the inner face of the stile of the upper sash 6, spaced abutments 20 are arranged. These abutments, asshown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, may consist of suitably spaced metal bars or plates or, as shown in Fig. 2-, spaced shoulders 20 may be formed in the face of a vertically extending metal bar fixed to the sash stile.
The hinge knuckles 12 of the base plate are so positioned with respect to the face of the upper sash 6, that the locking plate 14,- will normally move by gravity to the position shown in Fig. 1, so that when both sashes are closed, the free edge of this plate will be positioned beneath the lower abutment 20 on the upper sash. When in this position, it will be observed, from reference to Fig. 2, that the free end 19 of the rod 17 is spaced from the base plate 8. The lower sash is thus securely held against any upward movement and the upper sash held against downward movement with respect to the lower sash. \Vhen it is desired to open 'the window or move the sashes with respect to each other, the finger is engaged upon the end 19 of the rod 17 and said rod depressed to swing the locking plate let to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2. The upper sash may then be lowered or the lower sash raised to the desired position in order that the apartment may be ventilated, and upon the release of the rod 17, the looking plate M will immediately swing over by gravity so that the free end thereof will again be disposed beneath one of the abutments 20, thus preventing any further downward movement of the upper sash or upward movement of the lower sash. Now it is to be observed that the curved flange 13 extends over the upper edges of the meeting faces of the sash rails so that a would-be intruder could not insert a thin metal plate or other instrument upwardly between themeeting rails of the sashes and engage the same against the locking plate let and move said plate out of position beneath the abutment 20. In this manner, it will be seen that entrance to the apartment is absolutely precluded and as near as is possible to do so, the. window equipped with my improved sash. lock is rendered burglar-proof.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of use and several advantages of the invention will be clearly and fully understood. As no springs or other fragile elements are employed in the construction of my invention, the same is not liable to get out of order but, on the contrary, will be very durable in practical use.
The device may be readily applied to the window sashes by the individual, without requiring any alterations whatever in the sash construction. The locking device is also automatic in its action while the movable locking plate may be instantly moved, simply by the pressure of the finger, to its released position so that the sashes can be properly adjusted.
\Vhile I have shown and described the preferred form, construction and arrangement of the several parts, it is apparent that the same may be considerably modified in these respects and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is A locking device comprising a plate having one end portion provided with a substantially rectangular opening positioned inwardly of an end thereof, the portion of the plate provided with the opening being bent upon itself to provide knuckles at opposite sides of the opening and overlying the portion of the plate inwardly of the opening, the portion of the plate in advance of the opening and the knuckles being bent to afford an upstanding and outwardly curved guard flange, a second plate provided with an extension, and a pintle to which the eX- tension of the second plate is fixed, the extremities of the pintle being loosely mounted within the knuckles of the first named plate.
