My invention relates to fastenings for double swinging doors, and its object is to provide for fastening such doors tightly and securely with a padlock, in a convenient man ner and by simple and inexpensive means;
which object I attain by the device illustrated for example in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an inside perspective view of doors closed and secured by my fastening;
Fig. 2 is an outside perspective view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of parts of the doors with the fastening shown in plan;
Fig. 4 is a vertical section'of parts of the doors with the fastening shown in side elevation, the bar being in cross section; and
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the hasp and part of the bar on which it is mount- 2 ed.
The two doors 1 and 2 have hinges 3 mounting them on the jambs 4, and where the doors meet the door 2 has cleats 5, secured to it by screws 6, these cleats lapping inside the door 1. Such cleats are used on doors that are not rabbeted, with one rabbet overlapping the other. Rabbets are preferable, to make a weather-tight joint; but are not essential to my invention, it being necessary only that one of the doors have some element engaging behind the other door as shown, which other door is held by a fastening.
This fastening comprises the cross bar 7 with its ends lying in brackets 8 on the insides of the jambs 4 and extending acrossthe insides of both doors 1 and 2. The door 1, which engages the out-side of the cleats of the door 2, has the horizontalslot 9 through it near the top edge of the bar 7 and close to their slots coinciding with the slot 9; these plates protecting the wood of the door. The keeper 12 is a flat piece of metal bent with parts at right angles, one part 13 extending down behind the inner side of the bar 7 and being secured thereto by screws 14, andthe,
top of the bar 7 and having near its outer end the hole 16 to receive a padlock A (Fig. 2) after the part 15 has projected through the door slot 9; this hole being located so that the padlock bow comes very close to the front face of the outside plate 11 and holds the door 1 closely in against the bar 7, which door, by the engagement of the rabbet 5 with the rabbet 6 of the door 2, holds the door 2 also closely in against the bar 7.
Inclosing the doors for locking with my device, the user passes out through the door opening, carrying the bar 7 inside the en closure to position in the brackets 8, and then closes the door 2 against the bar. Then the door 1 is closed against the door 2 and the .bar, whereupon the part 15 projects from the bar through the door slot 9. The padlock A then is inserted and locked, holding both doors securely against entrance, and also tightly against the weather, much more efiectively than the ordinary hasp and padlock arrangement heretofore generally used. My fastening is especially useful for garage doors, but it will be understood that it is applicable to any double door, whether swing- 1ng in a horizontal plane, as illustrated, or in another plane, as cellar doors or hatchway closures. Also, while I have specifically disclosed my invention, modifications may occur, and I am not restricted to the specific disclosure, but having thus exemplified my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a door and ambs, said door being hinged on one of said jambs and having an aperture, and an element extending across the inside of said door and against the insides of said jambs, a keeper secured to said element to extend through said aperture uponclosure of the doorand adapted to receive locking means againstthe outside of said doorand thereby constitute the sole means of connection of saiddoor to said element whereby when said locking means is removed said door may swing open away from said element.
2. In combination with doors and jambs, said doors being hinged on the respective jambs to swing together for closure, one of said doors overlapping the other and having an aperture, and an element extending across the insides of said doors and against the insides of said jambs, a keeper secured to said element to extend through said aperture upon closure of said doors and adapted to receive locking means against the outside of the apertured door and thereby constitute the sole means of connection of the apertured door to the element and hold the other door closed by means of the overlapping of the apertured door, whereby when said locking means is removed said doors may swing open away from each other and said element.
