METAL DOOR AND WINDQW SUPPORT Filed April 10, 1930 6 M A? I 7 /7 Z2 I A? i //7 /0 r awe/114501:
Patented June 2 1931 UNITED STATES CLIFORD W. GR IFFIN, OF LEBANON, TENNESSEE METAL DOOR AND WINDOW SUPPORT Application filed April 10,
This invention relates to shielding and supporting means for door and window frames and more particularly to screen door and window frames.
An object of this invention is to provide a protecting and supporting shield for a frame so as to eliminate the necessity of mortising the members of the frame and thereby simplify the construction of the frames.
Another object of this invention is to provide in combination with a protecting shield for protecting the frame against weather or the like, a supporting member in the form of an angle iron which is adapted to be positioned on the corner or meeting point of the members of the frame so as to hold the member-sin firm contact one with another. A further object of this invention is to provide a shieldfor a Window frame which is'adapted to shield the wooden structure of the frame from weather or the like, the shield being so constructed as to project outwardly from the frame so as to close any gaps which may exist between the facing of the window frame due to warping, sagging or the like. The above and various'other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in and in part be understood from the following detailed, description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a detail fragmentary rear elevation of a device constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention; Figure 2 is a fragmentary front elevation of the device;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken through one of the frame sections; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail rear elevation of a door.
Referring to the. drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate correspond ing parts throughout the several views, the 45 numeral 10 designates one of the side members of a frame structure for a window screen or a screen door, and 11 designates another section of the frame which is adapted to be joined to the section 10 at the point 12, the jointure of the frame members 11 and 10 be- 1930. Serial No. 443,229.
ing preferably cut on an angle as, for instance, on an angleof approximately orv if desired, the end of the frame member 10 maybe adapted to abut against the inner edge of the frame member 11.
A corner bracing member 13 which is sub stantially L-shaped and constructed in the form of a flat bar. or the like having suitable apertures 14 therethrough is adapted to be secured to the inner face of the frame members 10 and 11 bymeansof bolts or screws 15 or the like,'the bracing or supporting member 13 being adapted to hold the frame members 10 and 11 in desired position. Through the use of-the angle member 13 it will be obvious thatin order to secure the frame members 10 and 11- together it will not be necessary toprovide a mortise and tenon joint for the two members there-' by reducing the manufacturing cost of the fra'me and at'the same time providing a substantially rigid frame structure.
The opposite or'outer face of the frame members '10 and 11 are provided with a re-, cess or rabbit 16 in which theedges of a wire screen 17 or the like are adapte'djto be seated, the screen being held within the rabbited portion 16 by means of tacks or nails 18 or'the like; a 2 f A protecting shield-19 which is constructed in the form of an elongated strip of sheet metal is positioned upon the outer face of the frame members 10 and 11 and is secured I thereto by means of screws or bolts 20 or the like. The bolts or securing members 20 extend through suitable apertures 21 which arespacedly positioned in the plate or reinforcing member 19; The width of the shield 19 is substantially in excess of the width of the frame members 10 and 11 so as to provide an outwardly extending flange portion 22 which is adapted to engage against the outer face of the window structure 'so as to cover as to overlap the abutting shield and so as i to permit the securing members 20 to securely hold the abutting corners or ends of the shield memberson the framestructure.
Where the frame members 10' and 11 V Y a comprise the frame structure of a door or the like disclosed in Figure 4, the angle bars 13 may be secured to the inner face of the frame members by means of a bolt 15 and theshield members 19 maybe secured to the outer face of the frame members 10 and 11 by means of bolts or screws 20'. r In the case of a door frame, the outwardly 7 extending flanged port-ion22 is omitted on the inner or hinged edge of the door and upon the lower bottom portion of the door, 15 the flanged portion 22 extending outwardly from only the free or open edge of the ,door and the top of thedoor so thatthe door may freely swing upon the hinges or the like, and so that the flange will not interfere-with 20 the swinging movement of the door where it swings relatively close to the floor or the like. It is, of course, understood that where screen doors or the like are positioned in 25 door frames, it frequently occurs that relatively large openings occur between the outer edge of the doorand the door frame and in order to close these gaps" or openings the shield 22 will engage against the door sash and effectivelvclose the openings.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that an effective protecting shield structure has been disclosed wherein the outer face of the wooden frame is thoroughly protected from the weather and at thesame timetheshield structure prevents bending ofothe frame, and eliminates the more or less complicated joints which are at present in use.-
It will, of course, be understood that vari- 0' ous changes and modifications may bemade in the details of construction and design-of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope ofthe following claim: hat is claimed is:-
In combination with a screen frame, an L-shaped bracing member, means for secur- 5c ing said bracing member on one face of the frame and across the corner thereof, a pro; tecting supporting shield positioned on the opposite face of the frame and-overlying the screen, said supporting shield comprising an elongated metallic strip covering the face of the frame and reinforcing the frame whereby to prevent bending or warping thereof, the outer edge of said supporting strip extending outwardly of the frame whereby to provide an outwardly extending flange for engagement with the outerface of a sash 1 structure. a In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
