EAR-RING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,359, dated October 9, 1894.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JULIUS BONNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ear-Rings, of which the following s a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide an ear-ring which can be readily and securely placed in position and which will sit neatly and tastefully and the invention resides in the novel features set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the ear ring closed or locked. In the drawings the letter E indicates the lobe or part of the ear and the ear wire A is made in the form of a swinging arm having at its free end a head 15 back of which is a groove or neck 10. The ear wire is jointed at 18 to a tube or housing 11. Into this tube is fitted a locking device 12 made in the form of a hollow slide from which extends a finger piece 13 through a slot 14' in the tube 11 so that said slide can be operated or moved in the tube or guide 11.

The locking device is provided with openings or slots 17 and 19, the former being narrower than the latter. The housing 11 has an opening 16 made to correspond. in width to the opening 19.

When the slide is moved to the position shown in Fig. 8, the arm A can be swung to move its head 15 in through

openings

16 and 19, after which the slide being moved into the housing will engage with its opening 17 about the neck or groove 10 so as to prevent the arm A from swinging open. To the arm A is secured a pendant B.

The device can be made in compact form so as to present a neat appearance and the locking device 12 being located at the inner side of the ear or lobe'E is not liable to be interfered with or to open accidentally.

By securing the pendant B to the arm A directly below the point at which the arm A is supported in the ear, the device or car ring will hang vertically so as to sit neatly and tastefully, and the device will not be liable.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The locking device provided with the openings 17 and 19, combined with a housing in which said device can slide, said housing having an opening corresponding to the opening 19, and a swinging arm provided with a head adapted to enter the locking device substantially as described.

The locking device provided with the openings17 and 19, combined with a housing or guide for the locking device, and a swinging arm provided with a head adapted to enter and to be engaged by the locking device, said arm being made to act as a support and being provided with a pendant directly below the point of support substantially" as de scribed.
