UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL A. LEHMANN, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO WATERMAN & LEHMANN, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
EAR-WIRE FOR EAR-RINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,265, dated May 6, 1890. Application filed October 19, 1889. Serial No. 327,542. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1,,EMIL A. LEHMANN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ear-Wires for Ear-Rings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ear-wires.
It is well known that ear-rings, especially those from which gem-holding settings are suspended, are very apt to tilt forward when hung in the lobe of the ear.
The object of my invention is to provide I 5 an ear-ring which will prevent such tilting.
The invention consists in an ear-wire having a thickened part which, having been forced through the ear-lobe from the front to the rear, rests against the back of the lobe and prevents the upper part of the ear-Wire from being tilted or moved forward by the weight of the gem-settin g or other pendant suspended from said ear-wire.
In the accompanying drawing a side view of an ear-ring provided with my improved ear-wire is shown.
The ear-wire A is of the usual shape, and
from the same the gem-setting B or any other ornamental device such as usually provided on ear-rings is suspended. The ear-wire A 50 is provided in its top part with an enlargementor thickening O. The ear-wire is passed through the aperture in the lobe of the ear from the front to the rear until the thickened part 0 is at the back of the lobe and in such a position that it can prevent the weight of the gem-setting or other pendant B from swinging the upper part of the ear-wire upward. When the ear-ring is to be removed, the thickened part 0 is drawn through the 40 aperture in the lobe. To prevent this thickened part from injuring the aperture in the lobe or causing pain, it is .made with a slight bevel from its thickened part toward the ends.
Having thus described my invent-ion, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1 An ear-wire for ear-rings, provided in its upper rear part with a thickened or swelled part for retaining the ear-ring in position on the lobe of the ear, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses,
EMIL A. LEHMANN.
