ALLEN RISLEY BINGHAM, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE PAIRPOINT MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
LocKlNe Blox.
SPCIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 524,303, dated' August 14, 1894.
Application led February 26, 1894. Serial No. 501 ,541- (No model.)
"0 a/ZZwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN RIsLEY BING- HAM, of New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locking Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which* Figuregl is a front view and Fig. 2 a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. l but showing the iianged lid and locking device in position to permit the lid to be drawn back, as shown in dotted lines.l
The object of my invention is to produce a cheap and eiective locking box adapted for use in sending parcels by mail; and my invention consists in the combination with a box and ahinged lid having a flange provided with 'an orifice of a rotary tongue mounted on a side of the box, as hereinafter more fully set forth. v
In the drawings, a is a box and a its lid hinged at a2 and provided at its front edge with a iange as which lies against the frontv side a4 of the box when the lid is down. Flange as is formed with an orice 0,5 through which the locking tongue b is passed both to lock the lid in place and to permit the lid to be thrown back, as shown by dotted line in Fig. 2. Tongue b is preferably formed with an oiset b or so bent at b that the outer end ofthe tongue laps over and rests upon a part of the iiange contiguous to the Iorifice a5 to secure the lid in its closed position. Tongue b is loosely connected to side 0.4 of box a, conveniently by an eyelet d6, so that it may be turned into position to permit iian ge as to pass over it in order to uncover the box (see Fig. 2). To close the lid, the tongue is turnedinto i position to permit that part of the flange 4o( which is above the orifice to slip under the tongue which is then turned or falls into its working position shown in Fig. 1.
It will be seen that the upper edge of the oriice slides under the rotary tongue when the lid is closed, the tongue being then swung to engage a lower portion of the flange surrounding the orifice, whereby the lid is locked. When the lid is freed for opening the box, the tongue is turned topermit the upper edge 5o of the orifice to slide out from under the tongue and to permit the flange to pass over the tongue.
I am aware of Browns patent, No. 287,093,
' and Adlers patent, No. 347,761, and disclaim 55 all that is shown in them.
What I claim is- The herein described combination of a box and a lid hinged thereto, provided with a flange having an orifice, the edge of which is 5o adapted to slide underneath a rotary tongue; said rotary tongue formed with an offset and mounted on a side of the box and adapted to pass through the orifice and overlap a portion of the liange contiguous to the orifice to lock the lid in place, said edge sliding fromunder said tongue to permit the flange to pass over the tongue when turned upwardly to permit the lid to be thrown back, all substantially as described.
