SHEET-METAL BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,269, dated August 12, 1890.
Application filed June 12, 1890.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. HAUCK, J12,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sheet-m etal boxes, and is especially applicable to boxes that are commonly carried in the pocketsuch, for example, as match-boxes; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and operation, which are hereinafter fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the box, having its lips closed. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section taken on the line as x of Fig. 1, the lips being shown in dotted lines thrown open. Fig. 3 is 'a plan view of the box, taken with its lips thrown open. Fig. 4. is a vertical section taken on the line y y of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow.
The letter A designates the body of the box, which is preferably made of sheet metal. The top of the box. terminates in stationary end projections 13 B, which are integral parts of the body of the box. The end projections B B are separated from each other a little distance by the upper edges 0 C of the body of the box, and the said edges 0 O and the edges of the said end projections 13 B together form the mouth of the box, which is closed by means of lips D'D, whose lower edges are connected to the body of the box along the edges 0 O by spring-hinges E E, that operate to throw the lips open in opposite directions, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. The lips D D are made of such form and are so fitted. to the body of the box and the end project-ions B B as to close the space between the end projections and to surmount them when the lips are brought togethenas in Figs. 1 and 2, which is done by turning them up and pressing them together against the actions of said spring-hinges E E. When they are thus pressed together, they become locked together by the spring-catch F, which is arranged along and secured to the inner edge of one of the lips, as seen in the drawings, a dog G on the spring-catch being so arranged as to enter a slot H, made in the edge of the opposite lip, in such a manner as Serial No. 355,209. (No model.)
to lock the lips to each other. They are unlocked by pressing the finger-piece I of the spring-catch, so as to withdraw the dog G from the slot H, when the action of the spring-hinges E E throws the lips D D open. In order to prevent the lips D D from being .pressed too far inward, stops J J J J are provided on the inner edges of the end projections B B in such positions as to arrest the inward movements of the lips toward each other beyond the point of engagement by the dog G of the spring-catch F of one of the lips with the slot H of the other lip. The stops J J of the end projections project laterally, and are depressed to form rabbets that is to say, they are not flush with the outer surfaces of the end projections, and consequently the outer surfaces of the lips are allowed to be flush with the outer surfaces of the end projections, notwithstanding the use of said stops.
It is obvious that on operating the springcatch so as to release the lips D from their engagement with each other the lips will be automatically thrown open, so as to expose the contents of the box, the central position of the lips between the end projections B B allowing one to insert his fingers between the end pieces and readily to grasp the contents 7 which are exposed for a considerable distance below the top of the box.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A sheet-metal box consisting of the boxbody having end projections formed with lateral stops, and the lips hinged to the opposite sides of the box and resting against the lateral stops when closed, substantially as described.
2. A sheet-metal box consistingof the boxbody having end projections formed with depressed stops to form rabbets, and the springactuated lips hinged to opposite sides of the box and resting in the rabbets against the stops when closed, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES J. HAUCK, JR.
