Description
K. LEE. DESK.
(No Model.)
Patented Jan. 23, 1894.
I II! I tlllllllL m m m WITNESSES Unrrno STATES KENNETH LEE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, AND HENRY F. ARMS, OF VVOROESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
DESK.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,465, dated January 23, 1894.
Serial No. 465,032- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KENNETH LEE, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desks; and I hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has particular reference to improvements in what are known in the trade as roll-top desks, in which the forward portion of the top rolls, or slides, into the back portion. The improvement may, however, be adapted to any form of desks.
The object of the invention is to increase the length of the desk without permanently adding to its size.
Another object of the invention is to so construct a desk that the length of the same may be increased independently-of the folding ends.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the desk and the combination therewith of the segmental extension-shelves, together with such other novel features of construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents an end view of a desk provided with my improved extension-device. Fig. 2 represents a top View of the same, one of the ends being opened and the desk extended. Fig. 3 represents a detailed view of the means for locking the end of the desk to the extension-shelf or both of these to the the outer straight-edges of the shelves 6-6 extend slightly beyond the ends of the desktop and may form ornamental-headings separating the forward base-portion of the desk from the swinging-ends 77. The swingingends 77 are furnished on their inner surfaces with guide-grooves in which the edges v of the rolling, or sliding, cover may move, and are hinged to the extension-top 8 so that they may be swung outward while their inward movement is limited by the ends of the top 5.
Securedtotheinner'surfaces of the swingingends 77 are latching-devices 9-9 the bolts 1010 of which may be inserted in the reinforced-perforations 1l11 of the shelves B6 or, when the ends 77 and the shelves 6-6 are closed, may serve to look the same to the main body of the desk by being pushed into the sockets 12-12 formed therein. In order to allow for the latching-device the ends of the top 5 may be slightly cut away. By this construction I am able to produce a desk the top of which can be considerably extended, while the swinging-ends may be used independently of the extension-shelves.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A desk having swinging-ends, and end extension -shelves pivoted independently of the ends adapted to be moved outward by said ends.
2. In a desk, segmental extension-shelves pivoted in recesses immediately below the table-top of the desk, in combination with swinging ends and latching-devices for securing the ends. and shelves together as described.
3. The combination with a desk havinga top 5 below which are recesses, and the extension-"shelves 6-6 pivoted in said recesses, of the ends 77 hinged above the shelves in planes at right angles therewith, and latching-devices carried'by the ends and adapted to latch the same to the shelves 6--6 and to the main portion of the desk.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
KENNETH LEE.
