IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION-TABLE SLIDES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,693, dated October 24, 1876 application riled July 1, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST MARGHAND, of St. Johns, in the county of Clinton and State of Michigan, have invented an 11nprove ment in Slides for Extension-Tables, Cf which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention relates to an improvementin the slides of extension-tables, of that class wherein each slide has secured to it a metal clip, which engages with the grooves in the adjacent slide; and it consists in the peculiar conformation of the metal clip, in combination with diverging grooves cut in the side of the slide, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pair of slides fitted with my improvement, nearly closed. Fig. 2 is a cross-section at .v m. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one slide detached from the other.
In the drawing, A A represent three of the slides of an extension-table, the sliding face of each having a central groove, a, plowed in it at a right angle with the face. At each side of the groove a another groove is plowed in these grooves, a a, diverging from the central one. The grooves of one slide are the counterpart of those of its mate. To the side of each slide, near one end thereof, is secured a cruciform metal clip, B, Fig. 3, whose longer arm is to be let in flush with the surface. The central rib b is let into its groove a, and also projects into the counterpart groove of the adjacent slide. The ends b b of the long arm of the clip are bent outward, so as to enter the grooves a a of the counterpart slide when inserted endwise therein, to lock the two slides face to face, while the main stress (in resisting deflection) is taken by the elongated rib b.
Suitable stops are driven into the central grooves a to arrest the ribs B, to prevent the slides from being drawn apart endwise.
I am aware of the patent granted January 18, 1876, to H. E. French, and hereby disclaim the same as making any part of my invention; but- What I claim as my invention is- The clip B, having the rib b and outwardlyturned ends b b, secured to the slide, having diverging grooves a a a, plowed in it, and adapted to enter corresponding grooves in an adjoining slide, substantially as described.
