LOUIS I-IEILBRON, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '7 90,893, dated May 30, 1905.
Application filed February 13, 1905. Serial No. 245,482.
1'0 a whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUISIIEILBRON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in folding tables to be used for dining, cardplaying, or other purposes.
The objects of the invention are to provide a folding table the legs of which can be folded against the under surface of the table, so that it can be stored in a comparatively small space when not in use, and, further, to provide a table that when in position for use will stand firmly on its legs on account of the locking devices which I have attached to the under side of the table-top.
My invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth in the specificationand illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of the under side of my table with one pair of legs folded against the top. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line X X of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side edge view of the table folded.
The letter a designates the usual table-top,-
and Z) the legs, a pair of which are hinged to the top near either end. These legs are formed each pair with cross-pieces b and 6 which cross-pieces b are slightly curved inwardly at either end, as shown at o. A longitudinal groove (Z is cut into each of these crosspieces 6.
To the under side of the table-top is secured a rectangular strengthening-frame This frame is cut away a portion of its depth at the points 0' to permit the cross-pieces to enter them when the legs are folded against the table-top. At either end of this rectangular frame I provide a pair of locking-tongues f, hinged thereto and adapted to swing outwardly. These tongues are provided with lips f at their outer extremities, and these lips are adapted to enter the grooves cl of the crosspieces 6. When the legs are opened and the tongues f are swung outwardly, their ends will bear against the curved portions 0 of the cross-pieces b, the lips f entering the grooves (Z and rigidly hold the legs open. All Wear or play will be thus taken up, as the arc of the curved portion 0 is smaller than the curve formed by the outer ends of the tongues.
It is evident that my table may be made in varied sizes and that the arrangement of legs and locks may be duplicated, as in the case of an extraordinarily long table.
The table is formed with adepending outer frame 9 formed on the under side of the table-top, and when the legs are folded their surfaces lie slightly inside of the surface of this frame. This arrangement permits the tables when folded to be stacked one on top of another without any unevenness, and this saving of space in storing or shipping is material.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A folding table comprising a top, a depending frame secured to the under side thereof near the outer edge, legs hinged to the under side of said top, two cross-pieces joining each pair of legs, the upper cross pieces being slightly curved inwardly near their extremities, longitudinal grooves cut into said upper cross pieces, a rectangular strengtheningframe secured to the under side of the tabletop, depressions cut into said frame adapted to receive the lower cross-pieces of the legs, a pair of locking-lips hinged to either end of said strengthening-frame and tongues formed on the outer ends of said locking-lips adapted to enter the grooves on the cross-pieces and to securely lock said legs in open position, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
