U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. W. DE JONG, ,OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
ABDOMINAL BANDAG E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,336, dated December 26, 1893 Application filed April 2 9, 1898.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. W. DE J one, of St. Paul, Ramsey county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abdominal Bandages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in abdominal bandages its object being to provide an improved form of bandagefor protection of the vital organs of the abdomen and loins, and consists in the improved features of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawing shows a plan View of my improved bandage in open or extended position, showing the form of the same, the position of the strengthening and stifiening ribs, and the means for taking up the lower edge of the bandage near each end to adaptit to the form of the body.
The body of the bandage A is made preferably of flannel, colored with a dye to render it specially beneficial for rheumatic troubles, and is formed with a straight upper edge 2. The lower edge on each side of the middle line is cut away in approximately circular form to fit over the hips. The central portion of the bandage is stiffened and strengthed by means of covered ribs 4 fastened to the fabric in V shaped form, approximately meeting at the lower edge of the bandage. Near each end strengthening transverse ribs 5 are secured, to which are attached buckles and straps 6 and 7 respectively, for securing the ends of the bandage Serial No. 472.295. ea model.)
together. Other strengthening ribs Sare secured to the bandage with their upper ends adjacent to the upper ends of the ribs 5 and standing at an angle therewith, so as to be in inverted V shaped position. In order to adjust the bandage closely to the person so as to conform to the contour of the abdomen, I arrange eyelets 9 and 10 adjacent to the lower ends of the ribs 5 and 8, through which are passed lacings 11 which may be adjusted so as to give the proper form to the bandage.
The bandage when applied to the person serves as a special protection for the small of the back and the kidneys, and the overlapping and broadened portions of the ends serve to protect the abdomen, the lower edge being fitted closely to the person by means of the lacing 11. It thus serves as a valuable protection for the vital organs, and is specially suited to the treatment of rheumatic and stomach diseases.
I claim- As an improved article of manufacture, the bandage A having the lower edge cut away at 3 to fit over the hips, the V shaped strengthening ribs 4, the inverted V shaped strengthening ribs 5 and 8, and the lacing 11 for taking up the garment intermediate of the ribs 5 and 8, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of April, 1893.
JOHN T- W. DE JONG.
