HERNIAL TRUSS.
SPECIFCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 671,999, dated April 16, 1901.
Application iiled December 3l, 1900. Serial No. 41,717. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be itknown that I, FRANoIs J. HAGE, Sr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Goldsboro, in the county of Wayne and State of' North Carolina, have i-nvented a new and useful Truss, of which the following is a specilication.
-This invention relates to improvements in trusses; and the object is to provide a simple, cheap, and comfortable truss for successfully arresting either single or double hernia, which may be readily adj usted, and which will cause absolutely no inconvenience, pain, or annoyance to the wearer.
With the above object in View the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, particularly pointed out in the claims, and clearly illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front View of my trussin position upon the body of a wearer; Fig. 2, a rear view of the same; Fig. 3, a View of the truss detached, and Fig. 4 a sectional view through the bandage of the truss.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, A designates the front or bandage portion of my improved truss, which is of such size and shape as to cover the lower portion of the abdomen. This bandage or front portion Ais elongated at its upper edge and at its respective ends toform oppositely-extending waistband-sections B B, designed to be placed about the waist of the wearer, crossed at the back, and brought around the body again to the front thereof, as illustrated in Figs. l and 2. Bandage A and sections B B are formed oftwo pieces of material of the same outline, placed flatly in contact, and secured by stitching the same along the edges thereof. A piece of haircloth or similar material C is placed between the two pieces of material comprising the bandage for the purpose of stiffening the same and giving to it a certain amount of'elasticity.
Secured to the ends of waistband-sections B B are straps D D', strapD being considerably longer than strap D', and each of said straps is provided at its fr ee end with a buttonhole E.
Waistband-sections B B are provided with buttons F F, which when the truss is in position upon the wearer are disposed at the back portion of the body.
Bandage A is formed at its lower edge with a recess G to t around the upper portion of the penis and with two depending portions y H H extending downwardly, one on each side of the penis, and passing beneath the crotch of the wearer. The bandage A, waistbandsections B B, and depending crotch portions H H are all formed integrally, as will be seen from the drawings.
Secured to the ends of crotch portions H H are straps I I, which pass beneath the crotch and are brought upwardly at the back of the wearer and at their ends attached to buttons F F of the waistband-sections B B, being formed with buttonholes J .I for this purpose.
The truss, as illustrated in Figs. l and 2, is applied to a hernia on the right side of the body, and the longer strap D is carried around the right thigh and secured at its end to the bandage A by having its buttonhole E receive a button K, carried by the lower portion of the bandage. Strap D is secured at its end to a button L, also carried by the bandage.
To adapt the truss 'for a hernia upon the left side of the body, th'e former is simply reversed and placed with what is its inner side in Fig. l out, so as to bring the longer strap D on the left side of the body.
A truss constructed as above set forth is eX- ceedingly comfortable to the wearer, as there is no eXtra pressure or friction, but sufiicient even pressure to thoroughly arrest the hernia. It is also simple in construction, capable of quick and convenient adjustment, and when once adjusted needs no. further adjustment and may be worn both during the day and night and when soiled washed to cleanse the same without injury thereto. Besides, it it light and elastic, so as to permit free movement of the body, and maybe manufactured and sold at a very small price, so as to be within the reach of all sufferers from hernia.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A1. A truss comprising a bandage having straps adapted to be passedaround the waist to the back and crossed and brought back to the fron t,fastening means carried bythe bandage and the ends of said straps for attaching the latter to the former, one of said straps being of a sucient length to pass around the thigh before being attached to the bandage,
straps extending from the lower portion of the bandage and adapted to be passed under the crotch and upward at the back of the wearer, and fastening means carried by the waist-straps and the ends of the crotch-straps whereby the latter may be attached to the former, substantially as described.
2. A truss comprising a front portion or bandage of a size and shape adapted to fit the lower portion of the abdomen, waistband-sections carried by said bandage and of a length to be passed around the waist to the back aud crossed and returned to the front of the body,
