FOLDING BEDSTEAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,230, dated December 19, 1893.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Highland, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in folding bedsteads, and isdesigned more es pecially for that class of beds known as single beds or cribs.

The object of the invention is to construct a bed of the above character, which shall be simple and economical to manufacture, and which can be folded up into a compact form when not in use.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinaf- Ler fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a folding bedstead constructed in accordance with my invention, ready for use. Fig. 2 is asimilar view of the same folded. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section, showing the head-rest in a different position.

In the said drawings the reference numeral 1 denotes four legs curved at their upper ends and connected together in pairs by means of transverse bars 2. These legs are pivoted at 3 to the side rails at, which are connected together by transverse rails 5 and 6 at each end, and are also provided with slats 7 which may be loose or permanently attached to side rails as desired, constituting the bed bottom. To the upper curved ends of the legs 1 are pivoted movable side bars 8, which are also pivoted to foot pieces 9, intermediate the ends of the latter. The lower ends of these footpieces are provided or formed with extensions 10, and pivoted at 12 to the side rails 4, At their upper ends these foot-pieces are connected together by means of a foot-board 13 and at their lower ends by means of a rail or bar 14, the lower edge of which rests upon the ends of the side rails, and holds the footpiece in place when the bed is in use. The legs 1, project up above the side rails 4, and the bars 8 pivoted thereto serve as guard rails.

Pivoted to the side rails 4,intermediate the ends thereof are two bars 15, connected together by means of transverse bars or slats 16, constituting an adjustable head-rest, and to the bars 15 are pivoted bars 17 having their free ends connected together by means of a transverse bar 18, the ends of which are adapted to engage with rack-bars 19, secured to the side rails 4, and hold the head-rest in its adjusted position. To the upper ends of bars 15 is also secured an inclined transverse bar 20.

The numeral 21 denotes two head-pieces, similar to the foot-pieces 9, which are pivoted to the bars 15 near the upper ends of the latter. These foot-pieces are provided with a head-board 23 and a transverse board 24 connected together by rounds 25.

Pivoted to the under sides of the side rails are push buttons 26, each having notches 27 in one end, which engage with the legs 1 near the foot of the bed, and hold the bed in proper position when ready for use.

The legs 1 upon one edge and intermediate of their ends, are provided with casters 28 which contact with the floor when the bed is folded and enable the latter to be readily moved from. place to place, or rolled under an ordinary bed when not in use.

The operation is as follows: When the bedstead is ready for use, it occupies the position shown in Fig. 1. To fold the bed up, the

turn buttons 26 are disengaged from the legs and the foot-pieces 9 turned'inwardly upon their pivots, when the side bars 8 are moved toward the head of the bed, causing the legs to be turned down into a nearly horizontal position, as seen in Fig. 2 with the casters 2S resting on the floor. The head rest is then lowered and the head-board turned inwardly as shown.
