0. 11', JAMES. LOCKING ATTAGHMENT FOB OIL CANS.
N0.'508,477. Patented Nov .'14, 1893.
Ui vi'rrn STA LOCKING ATTACHMENT FOR OIL-CA N S.
. V I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patient 08,477,d ted November 14, 1893.
Application filed May 11,1893- Serial No. i
1'0 all whom it may concern:
l 3e it known that I, OULLEN H. JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Franc1sco,in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Attachments for Oil-Cans; and I do hereby declare the following to be at'ull, clear, and exact decription of said invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it most nearly appertains to make, use, and practicethe same.
This invention relates to an improved oil the oil has to contend with is the fact that after designing an attractive can for the oil,
in order to induce customers to purchase of him, so asto secure the benefit of the can, which is of such construction, or provided with attachments, as to facilitate the drawing and handling of the oil, others dealing in oil induce the purchaser of the can to permit the refilling thereof with a different quality of oil. The owner of the can is thus defeated in his main object, which is that by selling a can in the first instance he will secure an increased sale of oil by the refilling of the cans. Consequently in order to provide against others utilizing the can for different oil than that which he sells, it is necessarythat the can be so constructed as will permit of its being securely fastened in some convenient position for the consumer, but which willenot allow removal unless by some one having a key which will unlock the same.
Referring to the drawing'sFigure ,1, is a -the opening or slot 0.

ing faucet. To the rear of the can Isolder or otherwise secure the metallic strips B, B which strips I stamp so as to provide the angular projecting leg pieces I), I). These angular legs serve, to maintain the can body away from the wall or post 0, as shown, and at the same time provide a solid support for the can when resting on its side, which it would not otherwise do owing to the'fact of the can body .being cylindrical in shape; The strips I also stamp with a raised central portion, as shown, which forms the loop 0/. Through the loop a, of the strips B, B, passes the hanging bar or strap 0, the upper end ot which projects beyond the top of the can and is provided with The lower end of said bar or strap 0', is provided with an inturned toe or flange D, which is soldered to the bottom D, of the can. This toe piece gives additional strength to the supporting strap or bar and overcomes danger of the weight of the can causing the solder to break.
When the can is supported, the slotted projecting end of the strap or bar 0', fits over staple E, which is driven into the wall, and 7 through this staple fits the lock E, which serves to prevent the removal of the can, unless same is unlocked and removed from within the staple.
Owing to the fact that the filling orifice f, is in the side of the can, it is necessary in order to refill the same, that the can be removed from the staple and turned upon its side. By thus placing the filling orifice it is impossible to refill the can unless removed from the book. When turned over for filling the projecting legs serve to hold the cylindrical can in proper position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure protection in by Letters Patent, is":-.
1. Thelcombination with an oil can, of the supporting strap secured thereto and projecting thereabove, the projecting end being slotted, and the supporting legs for maintaining the can away from the wall when secured supporting strap or bar running the entire.
length of the can and secured thereto, the
end projecting beyond the top and bottom of atr the can, the lower end terminating in a toe In testimony whei'eofleffix mysignature in which is turned under and fastened to the presence of two witnesses.
bottom of the can, the upper projectin end being slotted, of the metallic guide pieces for OULLEN JAMES 5 the supporting strap or bar, of the staple 01' Witnesses:
hook over which slotted end fits, and of the N. A. ACKER,
lock for securing the strap in locked position. I J. J. COONEY.
