W H HUNT I DISPLAY covm FOR BARRELS.
Patented Jan. 14
TO-UTHQ'WASHENGIDMDC UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIOEQ \VILBUR ll. HUNT, OF ASHTABULA, OHIO.
-DlSPLAY-COVER FOR BARRELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,000, dated January 14, 1896.
Application filed January 31,1895. Serial No. 536,816. No model.)
To all 10. 2.0112; it may concern.-
Be it known that LWILBUR H. HUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashtahula, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented anew and useful Display Cover and Pan for Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a display cover and pan for barrels, and has for its object to pro vide a simple and efiicient cover for use in connection with barrels containing produce, groceries, the. to display the contents thereof, said cover being provided with means whereby it may be attached to a barrel with facility.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim' In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a barrehcover embodying my invention applied in the operative position to a bar rel. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawin g.
1 designates a barrel, of any ordinary or preferred construction, and within the top thereof is fitted a pan 2, which corresponds, approximately, in cross-sectional area with the top of the barrel, and is provided at its upper edge with a lateral flange 3 to bear upon the chines thereof. This pan is adapted to contain a portion of the contents of the barrel, to give the appearance of a full barrel, irrespective of the quantity contained in the body portion thereof. Arranged above this pan and bearing upon the flange atthe upper edge thereof is a frame 4:, approximately circular in construction and corresponding in area with the top of the barrel. This frame comprises two portions or sections, of which the section 5 is stationary and is adapted to be secured to the barrel by means of spurs 6, which extend through notches or slots 7 in the outer overlapping edge of the flange and pass between the uppermost hoop S of the barrel and the staves. The other section, 9, of the frame is connected to the edge of the stationary section by means of hinges 10,
whereby it may be raised to withdraw the contents of the barrel.
The frame is constructed of bars of the proper form, to the under surfaces of which are secured beads 11, grooved or channeled, as shown at 12, to form seats for the glass 13, whereby the contents of the pan may be viewed without raising the hinged section of the cover. The depending beads form shoulders to fit within the pans.
From the above description it will be seen that the improved cover is simple in construction and is provided with simple and effective means for securing it to the barrel, such means being utilized to secure a pan in the upper end of the barrel within view when the cover is closed.
Furthermore, by reason of the detachability of the cover from the pan, the cover may be used independently of the pan upon a filled barrel and until the contents thereof have been removed sufficiently to permit the introduction of the pan. The spur being at tached to the cover engages the barrel whether the pan is used or not.
Furthermore, it is obvious that by employing a spur the operation of applyingthe cover, or the pan and cover, to the barrel is simplified, inasmuch as said spur maybe forced between a hoop and the staves without the use of tools, and that when so arranged the parts are held securely from displacement. The spur being permanently secured to the frame of the cover cannot be displaced or lost, and it serves at the same time to secure both the pan and the cover.
Furthermore, the pan and cover may be used upon a counter or table for the purpose of displaying goods, such as fruit, seeds, and other articles of merchandise, without application to a barrel, and under such circumstances the spur by which connection is secured between the cover and the pan is important to prevent displacement of the cover. The engagement of the spur with the notch in the pan is assisted in holding the cover in place by the shoulder on the cover, formed by the head, which fits within the pan or within the upper edge of the barrel. I dispense with all complicated means of attachment of the cover to the barrel or pan and employ a common and at the same time simple device, consisting of the spur for securing both the cover and the pan to the barrel.
Having described the invention, I claim A display cover for barrels consisting of a pan adapted to fit in the top of a barrel and provided with a lateral flange to rest upon the chines thereof, said lateral flange being provided in its outer edge with a notch or slot, a separable cover resting upon said flange and comprising a stationary section and a hinged section fitted with glass and combining to complete a circle necessary to cover the pan, said sections being provided at their outer
