UNITED t STATES vPATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS A. FLANEGIN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO LORENZO ALTON BAILEY AND MARY E. FLANEGIN, OF SAME PLACE.
LAMP-COLLAR.
.SPECIFICATION forming 'part of Letters Patent No. 508,296, dated November 7, 1893.
Application iiled December 22, 1892. Serial No. 456,105. (No model.) A
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS A. FLANEGIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, .haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Collars and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.
This invention relates to certainnew and useful improvements in lamp collars and it has for its objects among othersto provide an improved collar with means o f Ysecuring Athe same to the lamp bowl without "the `employment of plaster of paris or similar material, and whereby the collar can be quickly and easily detached or applied. The collar may be applied to lamps from which the collar has been detached owing to the crumbling of the plaster of `"paris A suitable packing is provided to prevent leakage. The construction is simple, cheap and efficient for the purpose for which it is designed.
Other objects and advantages of the inven-l tion will hereinafter appear and the novelYV features thereof willbe specifically definedby the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with theletters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through a portion of a lamp Vbowl with my improvement applied. Fig. 2 represents, in perspective, the parts constituting my invention, disassembled but in their relative positions. Fig. 3 is a plan of the securing means. Fig. 4. is an under plan view bf the collar.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views in which they appear.
Referringnow to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a portion of a lamp bowl of known construction and provided with a neck a as seen in Fig. I.
B is a collar having a depending flange b which should be of such a length as to receive between it and the body of the collar the neck of the bowl andV form a grasp thereon as seen in Fig. l. The body portion of this collar is threaded internally as seen and the threaded portion is preferably provided With an offset as seen at b in Fig. l to limit the movement of the burner which is designed to be screwed thereinto as indicated by dotted linesin Fig. 1.
C isa cylindrical metallic part threaded exteriorly as seen in Figs. I and 2 and provided at its lower edge with a flange c which Vupon one side is extended to form a projecting lip c as seen best in Figs. 2 and 3; this cylindrical part is also provided with notches czfor a purpose which will soon appear.
`D is a collar adapted to be sleeved loosely upon the tubular part C and is provided at its lower edge with a projecting lip d similar to the li p on the part C. In practice the part D is sleeved upon the tubular part C with the -lips of the two parts one upon the other upon .the same side and the parts are then inserted in the neck of the bowl by any suitable instrument engaging the little notches of the part C when such construction is provided andthe part D is then turned so that its lip will project under and engage the under face of the top fof the bowl as seen in Fig. l; the body portion of the collar is then screwed onto the threaded part of the tubular portion and the parts drawn together and the implement which held the parts C and D in place, removed. In order to insure a perfectly tight joint I sometimesemploy a packing ringE of any suitable material, such as fine cork or asbestus, which ring may sometimes be split so as to allow itto expand and contract. It is beveled on its outer and lower edge so that Aits surface there closes upon and engages with the Yedge of the neck of the lamp bowl Wedge- Alike thus more perfectly obstructing the pas- The lips of theV parts C and Dtshould'prefl erably be slightly curved to conform tothe curvature of the inner surface 'of the bowl, as seen in Fig. 1.
IOO
The notch @may be dispensed with and in lien thereof I make a lip or tooth d depending from the outer edge of the lip on the part D to engage the finger or be engaged thereby in separating the lips within the lamp bowl. In this movementJ the part C remains stationary and the part D is turned. This lip d is broad enough to project beyond the outer edge of the lip c when the part D is sleeved upon the part C. Its outer said lip d is of snfcient length to pass below and beyond the lip c and then by means of the finger of the operator engaging the said tooth or lip the parts C and D are moved relatively to each other until the lip c is at the opposite side of the bowl from the lip dand the lips c and ucl will then project under and engage the under face of the top of the bowl as seen in Fig. l.
Other modifications in detail may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacriticing any of its advantages.
That I claim as new is 1 l. The combination with a lamp collar having a flange to embrace a neck of a lamp bowl, of a part with lip and adapted to engage the collar, and a part rotatably sleeved on the first-mentioned part and having a lip, as set forth.
2. The combination with a collar having a threaded portion,of a tubular part with lip and threads to engage the threads of the collar, and a part rotatably mounted on the tubular part as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination with alamp collar with flange, of a tubular part engaging the collar and havinglip, the part rotatably sleeved on the tubular part and having lip, and a packing held in the recess, of the collar, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS A. FLANEGIN.
