Be it known that I, CHARLES I. PIGFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mississippi City, in the county of Harrison and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Crayon-Holders, of which the following' is a specification.
This invention relates to crayon-holders, and has for its objects to produce a simple inexpensive device of this character in which the crayon will while in use be held firmly in position and may as it becomes worn be readily fed forward to marking position and one wherein the device may when not in use be carried in the pocket of the operator without soiling his clothes.
To these ends the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation showing one form of embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of one of the clamping arms or members. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a modified form of casing, showing the parts thereof disconnected. Fig. 4 is an elevation showing a modified embodiment of the clamping` device removed from its casing. Fig. 5 is a plan View of the retainingring employed in connection with the clamping device shown in Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, it will be seen that the improved holder comprises an outer casing 1 and a crayon-clamping device 2, the casing being provided with a removable cap 3.
The casing 1, which is preferably composed of thin sheet metal, is of tubular form and provided at one end with external threads 4 for engagement by similar internal threads 5, formed upon the cap 3, whereby the latter is detachably engaged with the body of the casing, while the latter has its normally lower end merged into a reduced conical portion 6, the walls of which converge outwardly and terminate in an opening' 7, there being formed at the center of the cap 3 an internal bearing lug or projection 8, having a substantially semispherical recess or seat 9 formed therein.
The device 2 preferably consists of a plurality of spring-engaging members or arms 10, composed of sheet-steel and each bent -or otherwise shaped to produce at its inner end a substantially semicircular portion 11 and at its outer end an offset inclined engaging portion or finger 12, these ngers being adapted,

when the parts of the clamping device are assembled, to converge relatively and conform to the conical portion 6.of the casing. The terminals of the curved portions 11 of the arms are overlapped and connected together by means of a bolt or other fastening member 13, of non-circular form in cross-section, and provided with a semispherical head 14, which in practice has bearing in the seat 9 on the cap.
In practice the stick of chalk, crayon, or other marking material is arranged in the clamping device 2 between the spring-arms 10, with its active end projected beyond and clamped between the fingers 12, the latter being acted upon to maintain them in clamping engagement .by means of the conical portion 6 of the casing, through which they project, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the fingers being' projected a greater or less distance through the opening 7 to increase or decrease the clamping pressure by adjusting' the cap 3 upon the body of the casing. This adjustment is effected by securing the cap onto the casing,
and during the rotation of the cap incident to the adjusting operation a smooth bearing is afforded between the cap and device 2, owing to the semispherical head of the fastening member being situated in the seat 9.
In the form of device illustrated in Figs. 3 to the body 1 of the casing has at its normally upper end a reduced portion or neck 15, provided with angular seats for the reception of pins 16, projecting from the inner face of the cap, these seats being preferably inclined from the outer edge of the neck toward its point of union with the body and each comprising, by preference, a primary portion or groove 17, in which the corresponding pin 16 initially seats, and a secondary portion or slot 18, forming a continuation of the groove and with which the pin may be engaged. There is formed at the juncture of the groove and slot a shoulder 19 and at the inner terminal of the slot a shoulder 20.
The engaging device 2 is similar in construction to that above described, except that the fastening member 18 is of circular form in cross-section, while the members 10 are secured against relative rotary movement upon the fastening device 13 by means of a ring or collar 21, having at appropriate intervals seats or recesses 22 for the reception of the arms 10. Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is- V ln a device of the class described, a casing having an open end and a bearing portion, the walls of which converge toward said open end, a clamping device arranged in the casing and comprising' a plurality of clamping members having meeting ends and relatively convergent inclined portions adapted to be acted upon by the bearing portion ot' the casing for moving the members to clamping position, a bearing-head provided at the meeting ends of the clamping members, and a cap ad justably engaged with the casing and having a scat for the reception of the bearing-head.
