ALEXANDER SEGMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
JEWELRY.
Application filed November 16, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER SEGMAN, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Jewelry, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to an article of jewelry, and particularly to a finger ring.
It is well known that oftentimes it is desirable to wear rings on different fingers, and in order to do so, unless the fingers are of nearly the same size, it is necessary to have rings of difierentsizes. Furthermore, it is well known that the fingers of many persons are larger at the joints than in those portions where finger rings are worn, and in such cases, as is obvious, the ring of ordinary construction which is of suflicient di ameter to pass over the enlarged joint is too large for comfort or a good appearance when placed in position on the finger, the setting having a tendency to turn in.
Now, the object of my invention is to overcome the hereinbefore named difliculties by providing a finger ring which is adjustable not only to different sized fingers but also to position after the ring has been placed on the finger, so that in the use of a ring constructed in accordance with my invention, the same may be worn with equal facility on substantially any finger, and furthermore may be passed over a finger having an enlarged joint and adjusted thereon to properly fit the finger when placed in position.
The construction of my improved finger ring will be hereinafter more particularly described in conjunction with the drawings forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is an enlarged sectional plan of one form of my invention, Fig. 2 is a similar View of the same construction showing the parts in another position, Fig. 3 is a sec tional plan illustrating a modified form of the invention, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of another modification of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, in carrying out my invention, I preferably employ a ring, indicated at 10, and provided with a setting 11 including a suitable base and a plurality of prongs adapted to receive a jewel, indicated at 12. To the base of the setting is secured a screw-threaded shank 13 adapted to be received in a tapped opening 14 in the ring Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 14, 1913.
Serial No. 731,702.
10. Swiveled on the inner end of the screw threaded shank, I employ an adjusting plate 15, which, as will be seen from the drawing, is made to conform with the inner surface of the ring and preferably extends a dis tance slightly less than half the circumference of the opening in the ring, the screw threaded shank being swiveled to the adjusting plate at approximately its central position.
In order to guide the adjusting plate, I preferably employ a pair of pins 16 fixed in the adjusting plate on either side of the screw threaded shank and adapted to extend into suitable openings provided therefor in the body 10 of the ring.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that the setting may be turned with the screw threaded shank so that the parts assume the position shown in Fig. 1, in which the maximum diameter or size of the ring is obtained, in which posit-ion the ring may be placed on a finger and then the setting turned in the opposite direction to move the adjusting plate to the position shown in Fig. 2, or any other position necessary to adjust the ring to the proper size to fit the finger.
Referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the setting, as indicated at 17 may be made permanent or an integral part of the ring 10 and the adjustable members applied to the ring at the opposite side thereof. In this construction, the screw-threaded shank, as shown at 18, has a tapped opening in the ring through which it passes, and exteriorly of the ring, the screw threaded shank is provided with a thumb screw 20 by means of which the same may be turned. On the inner end of the screw threaded shank 18, an adjusting plate 21 is swiveled, and this plate also is provided with guide pins 22 adapted to enter suitable openings provided therefor in the body of the ring.
Referring to Fig. 4, it will be seen that in some instances it may be desirable to employ a fixed setting, that is one immovably connected with the body of the ring, and to apply the adjusting devices to that portion of the ring containing the setting. In this construction, the setting is indicated at 23, Fig. 4, beneath which the ring is provided with an opening 24. The screw threaded shank in this construction is indicated at 25, and at one end is provided with a thumb screw 26 contained within the recess or opening 24, and at the other end within the ring has an adjusting plate 27 swiveled thereto. This adjusting plate, similar to those hereinbefore described, is provided with guide pins 28 passing into openings provided therefor in the body of the ring, and the operations and the adjustment of the parts are the same as those hereinbefore described in connection with the other forms of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. An article of jewelry comprisinga ring, a plate normally set within a recess provided therefor in the inner surface of the ring, and revoluble means for adjusting the said plate to position to vary the effective size of the ring.
2. An article of jewelry comprising a ring, a plate normally set within a recess provided therefor in the inner surface of the ring, means for guiding said plate to maintain the same in alinement with the plane of the ring while being adjusted to position, and revoluble means for adjusting the said plate to position to vary the effective opening of the ring.
3. An article of jewelry comprising a ring, a plate normally set within a recess provided therefor in the inner surface of the ring, a setting, and revoluble means connected with the setting and operated thereby for adjusting the said plate to position to vary the effective opening of the ring.
4:. An article of jewelry comprising a ring, a plate normally set within a recess provided therefor in the inner surface of the ring, revoluble means for adjusting the plate to position to vary the effective opening of the ring, and a pair of pins connected to the said plate and extending into apertures provided therefor in the body of the ring to maintain the said plate in position relatively to the ring While being adjusted to place.
5. An article of jewelry comprising a ring, a plate normally set within a recess provided therefor in the inner surface of the ring, a screw threaded shank swiveled at one end to the said plate, and a pair of pins connected to and projecting from the said plate and adapted to enter and slide within recesses provided therefor in the body of the ring to maintain the said plate in position relatively to the ring while being adjusted to place.
6. An article of jewelry comprising a ring, a plate fitted Within the ring, revoluble means for adjusting the plate to diflerent positions within the ring, and means for guiding and maintaining the said plate in the plane of the ring during the adjustment thereof.
Signed by me this 13th day of November, 1912.
