Description

Y (No Model.)
B. P. SHETIER.
TOY.
Patented 0101:. 31', 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EGBERT P. SHETTER, OF BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,851, dated October 31, 1893.
Application filed November 8,1892. Serial No. 451.332. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EGBERT P. SHETTER, a resident of Butler, in the county of Butler and state of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in toys and more particularly to a childs toy horse, the object of the invention being to produce a toy of the class mentioned which shall be pleasing in appearance and which shall afford amusement to the user.
With this object in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a bottom plan view. Fig. 2 is a side view. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are views of a modification.
A represents a stick or pole having a representation of a horses head, mane and bridle, secured to one end thereof. At the opposite or rear end, the stick or pole is broadened and bifurcated to produce two parallel arms Ct, a, between which a wheel B is mounted on an axle b passing through the arms a, a. Proecting from each face of the wheel B, are pins 0, c, the pins 0 projecting from one face alternating with the pins 0 projecting from the other face. For the accommodation of these pins and so as not to obstruct the revolution of the wheel B, the arms a, a, are provided with notches or recesses d. Secured to the under side of the widened portion of the stick or pole is a series of springs e, which, when the toy is in use and the wheelB made to revolve by running on the floor or ground, will be struck by the pins 0, c, and as the wheel continues to revolve the pins will move away from the springs and permit the latter to strike the arms a, a, and thus produce a snapping sound. In attaching the springs e to the widened portion of the stick or pole, they will preferably be pivoted and held in proper position to be operated by the pins on the wheel,
by means of a plate f. By connecting the springs in this manner, their free ends may be moved out of the path of the pins on the wheel when it is desired to dispense with the noise.
In order to increase the rapidity of the snapping soundsthe construction shown in Fig. 3 may be adopted. In this form, in addition to the pins 0, c, shorter pins (1 will be made to project from the faces of the wheel B and alternate with the pins 0, c, recesses e being made in the arms a, a, for said shorter pins d. Short springs 6 will be secured to the widened portion of the stick or pole to be engaged by the pins (1, d.
In some cases I prefer to connect bells with the springs c. This will be done as shown in Fig. 4. That is to say, wires g will be attached to the springs and bells h attached to the wires. When this form of the invention is adopted, the springs 6 will preferably be located on the top of the widened portion of the pole, and the latter adapted to be pushed instead of being pulled along, as is the case with the other forms of the invention described.
In Fig. 5, the springs c are secured to the ends of the arms a a. In this form of the invention the springs are extended and at their free ends are provided with bells 1.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A toy comprising a stick or pole, a Wheel carried by said stick or pole, pins carried by said wheel, and springs pivotally connected to said stick or pole and adapted to be operated by the pins carried by the wheel, substantially as set forth.
2. A toy comprising a stick or pole, a wheel carried by said stick or pole, pins carried by said wheel, springs carried by the stick or pole, and adapted to be struck by the pins on the wheel, and bells carried by said springs, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
