1 Claim. (Cl. 46114) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in play hoops and more particularly to the provision of a handle having an eye at one end for embracing the hoop to roll the hoop in a trundling action.
An important object of the invention is to provide a toy of this character constructed with a sound-producing device actuated by the turning movement of the hoop.
A further object is to provide a toy of this character of simple and practical construction, which is eflicient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on a line 22 of Figure 1; and,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on a line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates an elongated handle which may be constructed of wood, plastic or other suitable lightweight material and formed at its lower end with a laterally extending arm 6 which is formed with an eye 7 at the outer end of the arm.
A play hoop 8 is placed in the eye 7 for free turning ice movement therein whereby the hoop may be rolled by a pushing action applied to the handle by a child walking or running alongside the hoop while the handle serves to support and maintain the hoop in an upright position and to guide the hoop in a desired direction.
One side of the hoop 8 is formed with a plurality of circumferentially spaced notches 9 and intervening ribs and a resilient ratcheting tongue 10 is embedded or otherwise suitably secured at one end in an adjacent portion of the eye 7 and with the free end of the tongue 10 projecting radially inwardly with respect to the eye for successively engaging the notches 9 and ribs as the hoop 8 is rotated to produce a vibratory or ratcheting sound.
A whistle 11 of a conventional construction is secured to the upper end of handle 5.
As the handle 5 is pushed forwardly to turn or roll the hoop, the engagement of the resilient tongue 10 in the notches 9 of the hoop will produce a sound to add to the amusement of the child using the toy.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A trundle toy comprising in combination, a play hoop, a handle having an eye at its lower end in which the hoop is rotatably engaged for guiding and rolling the hoop along the ground, said hoop having a plurality of notches and intervening ribs in its surface and a vibratory tongue carried by the eye and projecting radially inwardly thereof and having a free end portion engaging and actuated by the notches and ribs to produce sound upon the turning of the hoop.
