. M. E. PUNTENNEY. SCHOOL DESK AND ORGAN GOMBNED Patented Oct. 17,1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MINNIE E. PUNTENNEY, OF BUTLER, ILLINOIS.
SCHOOL-DESK AND ORGAN COMBINED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,938, dated October 17, 1893.
Application tiled January 4, 1893- Serial No. 457,241. (No model.)
.To all whom it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, MINNIE E. PUNTENNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butler, in the county of Montgomery and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in School-Desks with Organ-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in school-furniture, and consists in a schooldesk and organ combined, which shall occupy no more space than an ordinary school-desk While at the same time it is ever ready for use either as a dest or organ; thus my invention enables the pupils of a school to change from their regular studies to that of music without the necessity of leaving their seats, losing time, or creating noise or confusion.
My invention is clearly shown in the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure l is a perspective view of the desk and organ combined. Fig. 2, is a verticaltransverse section through the line or as of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 a similar view through the line y, y', of same figure.
The frame or casing of my improved article of school-furniture, is made rectangular in form, with corner-posts A supported on casters B. The back O, and ends D, E, as well as the front (F) of the bellows-compartment G, are preferably made in panels, as shown, but any other style of finish may be adopted Without interfering with the nature of my invention. The top of the casing is made perfectly smooth, and in two longitudinal parts H, I. The rear part H is permanently secured to the frame and the front part hinged thereto so as to fold back over the beveled side pieces t, fi, and backelevation 1l when the invention is to be used as an organ.
Within the upper portion of one end of the frame is an inclosure L, in which is fitted a series of drawers l, Z', for containing the books, dre., of the pupil. Access is had to the upper-drawer, which is intended to contain sheet-music, &c., by pulling same outward, or by raising the hinged portion I of the top.
The key-board of the organ extends from the drawer-compartment to the opposite end of the desk, and is inclosed by a flap fm, which is hinged to the under-side of the front part of the top, as shown at m', in Fig. 2.
The bellows, not necessarily shown, are 55 located in the bellows-compartment G, so as to connect by means of rods a, b, with the rear of the foot-plates c, d, of the pedals O, O.
The front-edges of the aforesaid foot-plates are connected by hinges e, e', with steadying- 6o plates P, Q, which in turn are hinged to a 'longitudinal foot-brace R, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2, so that the pedals may rest on a front-bar S, when the article is to be used as an organ; or be locked in an ele- 65 vated position when used as a desk. For
the latter purpose the upper surface of each pedal, is provided with a staple t, t', so as to be engaged by the lower-hooked end of the spring-catch u, u', the upper ends of which 7o are furnished with handles o, fu', to permit of their being depressed when the pedals are required for use. When locked in elevated positions the pedals form rests for the feet of the pupil; and prevent emission of sound 75 from the instrument, as well as protect the mechanism thereof from injury.
The object in having the front portion I,of the top to extend the full length of the instru ment is to give access to the music-drawer, 8o Without necessity of handling same, and thus obviate all noise therefrom.
The beveled side pieces t', fi', are each provided with a rubber-button .or spring i3 to protect the cover I, when folded back against 8 5 same; as well as to prevent noise during said operation.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 9o l. A school-desk and organ combined, having a drawer-compartment located at one side of the key-board, and a hinged lid adapted to cover the key-board and upper-drawer of the drawer-compartment,substantially as set 95 forth.
2. The combination with the combined desk and organ, the hinged pedals, as described, each pedal provided with a staple, and the locking devices for engaging said staples when I o the pedals are raised, substantially as and for the purpose specified. v
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MINNIE E. PUNTENNEY.
