To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WVASSON, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Crawfordsville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Desk, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates more particularly to a desk and book-case combined, which when placed in a horizontal position forms a neat and novel office-desk and when changed to a vertical position, it becomes an ornamental and useful book-case as well as a writing-cabinet. In either position the desk is capable of being accurately adjusted to suit either a standing or sitting posture. I attain these objects by the peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.

The frame-work of my desk comprises a hinged lid 1, a front-piece 2, a bottom-piece 3, a back-piece 4, the drawer-strips 5, the L- shaped side-pieces 6, and the folding legs or standards 7 and 8. Lid lis hinged at 9 and lockedat 10. The rear side of the back-piece 4 is provided with a pair of serrated bars 11, 11 which catch the lugs 12, 12 of the standards 8, 8 for the purpose of adj usting the desk in its vertical position to suit either a standing or sitting posture. The bottom-piece 3 is also provided with a pair of serrated bars, like those of the back-piece 4, which catch lugs at the upper ends of the standards 8, 8 for the purpose of accurately adjusting the desk in its horizontal position to suit either a standing or sitting posture as may be desired by the occupant.

The drawer-strips 5, 5 having the rectangular openings 14, 14,14, 14 for the reception of a pair of changeable drawers 15, 15, are provided with a board 16 hinged at the inner angle of said strips and adapted to be fastened against either of them by means of the buttons 17, 17 attached on the inner side of said strips. 18 indicates folding shelves, the inner side being hinged or pivoted as the maker or manufacturer may choose. The folding or closing of thelower shelf 18 necessitates the construction of a doubly folding shelf as indicated. The shelves are folded against the bottom of the desk when placed in a horizontal position and opened when changed to a vertical position.

The lower, posterior section of the desk comprises a frame-work 19 which sets said sect-ion 01f into pigeon-holes and shelves, and the upper portion adjacent to the pigeon-hole and shelf frame-work, is provided with a pair of changeable drawers 15, 15. A round 20 binds and braces the free ends of standards 7 which are hinged at 21 to the L-shaped side-pieces 6. The inner standards 8, being tied and braced near their outer ends by the rounds '20, are hinged or pivoted about their longitudinal centers between the standards 7. The projecting lugs 12 securely fastened in the ends of standards 8, catch in the serratures of the bars 11 to hold the desk in the desired position.

In changing the desk from a horizontal to .a vertical position, the body of the desk is raised, turned, and supported vertically until the standards 7, 8 are swung backward underneath it and the lower ends of standards 8 raised to meet the serrated bars of its back-piece which supports the desk in a vertical position by releasing its weight upon the standards. The shelves are opened from the bottom of the desk and the drawers changed from the upper drawer-strip to the lower or front one, the board at the inner angle of said strips being unbuttoned from the front strip and buttoned against the upper one to close the openings made vacant by changing the drawers. In adjusting the desk .to suit the standing or sitting posture of the occupant, the desk is elevated by pushing the standards 8 inward on the serrated bars ind lowered by setting them forward on said ars.

In the construction above described I produce a novel and useful oflice desk that is easily changed from a horizontal to a vertical position for an ornamental book-case or writing-cabinet and that is capable of being quickly adjusted to suit any standing or sitting posture.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a desk, the combination, of a hinged lid, a front-piece, a bottom-piece, provided with a pair of serrated bars, a back-piece having a pair of serrated bars securely fastened thereon, the L-shaped side-pieces, the drawer-strips having rectangular openings therein for the reception of a pair of changeable drawers, the changeable drawers adapted to fit snugly in said openings, the board hinged or pivoted at the inner angle of said strips and adapted to be fastened against either by means of buttons secured on the inner side of said strips, the hinged shelves adapted to be folded against the bottom of the desk, the pigeonhole and shelf frame-w rk in the lower, posterior section of the desk,and a pair of hinged standards adapted to be folded, opened, and adjusted to support the desk in either a horizontal or a vertical position, substantially as specified.
