WILLIAM R. HIND AND EDWARD O. HIND, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HINGED COVER FOR SHOW-BARRELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,930, dated August 2.2, 1893.
Application filed January 6, 1893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM R. HIND and EDWARD O. HLND, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinged Oovers for Show-Barrels; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to that class of covers for barrels and like receptacles in which a glazed or transparent cover has hinged attachment to the top of the barrel, &c.,so as to protect the contents of the barrel from dust, ttc., while fully exposing the saine to observation.
The object of the present improvement being to provide a simple and durable hinge appliance for such uses embodying the following features:-a convenient and substantial attachment of the cover or lid to the bari-el, &c., in a hinged manner, and with which provision is made for supporting the cover or lid in its open position; an adjustable formationl of the cover hinged appliance so that the saine can be readily adjusted to bring the cover accurately in position over the opening of barrels or pails of dierent sizes; and a simple and convenient means whereby a ready and effective locking of the cover in its closed position is effected. We attain such objects by the constructionrand arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hinged cover of a barrel in a closed condition, embodying the present improvement; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional elevation at line (2-3 Fig. 4) of the present improved hinge appliance as applied to the top of a barrel, the parts being shown in aclosed condition; Fig. 3, a similar View with the parts in an open condition, the appliance being shown as applied to a pail; Fig. 4, an end elevation; Fig. 5, a transverse sectional elevation at line (5-5) Fig. 2 5 Fig. 6, a plan View of the hinging appliance in its opened condition, and Fig. 7, a plan View of the main or stationary member of the appliance.
serai No. 457,536. in@ man.)
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several views, as represented in the drawings.
The cover for the barrel, pail or other receptacle will consist of the ordinary outer marginal inclosing frame (1) and glazed center (4) of glass, wire gauze, &c., the whole adapted to cover the opening of a show barrel, pail or other receptacle (6) to protect the contents of barrel, dac., from dust, &c., while exposing the same to View. l
In the present invention, the cover is secured in a hinged manner to the top of the barrel, 85e., by lmeans of a hinged device c onsisting of a main base or member (7) having pendent lugs (8) that straddle the rim of thev barrel, dto., one of said lugs being provided with one or more pointed teeth (9) and the other with a clamping screw (l0) or other equivalent clamping device so as to effect a firm and substantial attachment of the inember (7) to the rim of the barrel or pail.
(11 and 12) are a pair of plates hinged together at one end, so as to be capable of pivotal movement, which in the presentconstruction is limited by a stop lug (13) on one of said plate members coming to an abutment against the other plate member, when in the use of the appliance, the barrel cover is swung into its proper open position. One of these plates (11) is attached to the cover by screws or other means, and the other plate (12) is adj ustably attached to the main base (7) by confining side lugs (14) between which the hinge plate (12) is adapted to be adJ usted in a longitudinal direction and locked at its adjustment by means of the vertically arranged locking key (15) the lower end of which has .an angular turn to constitute an operating handle, while its upper end is formed with a lateral finger (16) to engage the hinge plates (1l and A12) as hereinafter described. This locking key (15) is arranged vertically in a side lug or ear on the main member (7) so as to turn in a horizontal plane, and in line with it openings or slots (17 and 18) are formed in the hinge plates (11 and 12) through which the lateral locking finger (16) can be moved vertically to engage the top of the plate (11) as indicated in Fig. 5, to lock the cover parts in their closed condition, or be- IOO . tion to use any other equivalent means to that described for locking the hinge members to the desired adjustment, preference being given to the construction shown on account of cheapness and simplicity of construction, and while the present improvements are shown applied to a round cover for barrels, pails, dac., it is within the province of the present invention to apply it to a square, or other shaped cover for boxes, the.
The following are among the practical advantages resulting from the present improved construction. is had to the whole mouthor top ot' the barrel, &c., the cover can be quickly attached and detached when required. A locking of the cover can be readily eected when desired, and the cover can be readily adjusted to dierent sizes or diameters of barrels, pails, dac.
Having thusfully described our said invention, What We'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A hinge appliance for covers of barrels, i
the., comprising an attaching member (7) and With the cover opened access a pair of hinge members (11 and 12) secured in an adjustable manner to the main attaching member, substantially as set forth.
2. A hinge appliance for covers of barrels, dac., comprising an attaching member (7) and `a pair of hinge members (11 and l2) adjustably attached to the main members, and prolvided with stop lugs (13),substantially as set orth.
3. A hinge appliance for covers of barrels, dsc., comprising an attaching member (7) a pair of hinge members (11 and 12) adjustably attached to the main member, and a locking `key (15) arranged vertically and having a gage the hinge plate (12), substantially as set i forth.
5. A hinge appliance for covers of barrels, tbc., comprising an attaching member (7)1provided With pendent lugs (S) teeth ,(9)1 and clamping screw (10) and a pair of hinge members (11 and 12) adj ustably attached tothe f main member, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof witness our hands this 24th day of December, 1892.
WILLIAM R. I-IIN D. EDWARD O. I-IIND.
In presence of- W. E BAILEY, EDW. A. HIND.
