T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, L RICHARD HIBBARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sample- Dispensers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sample dispensers, whereby samples, particularly to be taken from cans of preserved materials,may be carried in a sanitary and accessible and convenient manner from point to point, or whereby commodities may be carried sealed prior to use of the same, such as foods for picnic and camping parties and the like.
The invention has for its object to provide an improved device of this character which will be superior in point of relative simplicity and inexpensiveness of construc tion taken in conjunction with compactness in form and positiveness and efiiciency in operation and general serviceability.
The invention. consists of a departure from the structures and functions disclosed and claimed in prior Letters Patent issued to Luke J. Fairbanks for sample dispensers, as follows: No. 1,278,450, dated September 10, 1918, and No. 1,281,992, dated Oct. 15, 1918.
The invention consists in the novel and useful provision, formation, construction and combination of parts, members and fea tures, all as hereinafter described, shown in the drawing, and finally pointed out in claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an isometric view of a sample dispenser constructed and organized in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken generally on the line m a2 Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of the appended arrows; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the showing in Fig. 2, parts being in altered position and sectioned.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are designated by the same reference characters.
Referring particularly to the drawing, A designates a container, B a closure means for said container, 0 sealing means and D resilient means for holding the closure in position.
The container member A comprises a bot tom member 1, sides 2 and 8, and ends 4% and 5; said container being open at the top. The side and end portions 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 respectively, have adjacent to their upper edges along their peripheries downwardlyand outwardly curved portions 6. acting in part as a strengthening bead. I
The closure means B has its top portion downwardly sloped from a common center, as at a, thus'forming an upwardly arched portion, while the edges or peripheries of the closure means B are upwardly raised and outwardly and downwardly curved to correspond in form to the similar portions of the peripheries of the container A. The raised portion 72 of the closure means 13 is provided with a sealing means C chambered within the curved portion of the periphery of the closure means B. I
The resilient means D is for the express purpose of. holding the closure means B in position upon the container A. Said resilient means is normally athwart the closure as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and has one end bent downwardly and upwardly so that it engages the peripheral projection of the container A as shown at 8. The opposite end, as at 9, is provided with a hinge l0 oining with a projecting piece 11 which has a revoluble cam member d attached thereto by a suitable pin 12. The cam member (Z is provided with a flange portion 13, said flange portion normally engaging with the peripheral projection 6 of the container A. The resilient means D is likewise bowed downwardly as shown at 6 so that it may come in contact with the upwardly arched portion a of the closure means 13, so that when the handle f attached to the cam member d is revolved upwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, from the position shown in Fig. 3, the downwardly bowed portion 6 of the means D will come in contact with the upwardly arched portion a of the closure B and exert a compressing action upon the closure means B. This action forces the sealing means (J chambered within the curved portion of the closure B upwardly and securely locks same to the container A, so that the contents cannot be removed or displaced from same.
The sealing means C chambered within the peripherally curved portion of the closure means B, has a small air space 14 above it, and this air space allows room for the sealing means when same is compressed by the closure means B fastened to the container A. The air space acts suctionally to hold the sealin means in place.
If it were desired to display the contents placed within the container A the handle f shown in Fig. 1 would be revolved downwardly, the cammember (Z thus Changing its radius of action so that the resilient means D holding the closure means 13 to the container A could be released from its position, thusrelieving the pressure exerted upon the top portion a of the closuremeans B. The closuremeans B can'then be elevated from the container A'by exerting a slight pressure along the periphery of the means B and the contents contained within the container A displayed to View. Conversely the closure means B can again be locked into position by replacing and securing the resilient means D in position.
It is obvious that many changes, mociiications and variations may be made in practisingmy invention, without, however, departing from the true spirit thereof.
Having thus disclosed my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A device of the character described, including a sheet metal container having the edges thereof returned outwardly to provide a convex peripheral seat, a removable sheet metal cover having the middle portion thereof arched upwardly and provided with a crown at substantially the-central portion thereof, the periphery ofthe cover being extended upwardly and returned to provide a peripheral channel corresponding to the convex peripheral seat of the container, a clamping bar extending transversely across the cover and engaging the crown thereof at one point, an integral hooked arm extending downwardly from one end of the clamping bar and detachably interlocking with the returned edge of the container at one side thereof, a swinging arm pivotally connected to the opposite end of-the clamping bar, and a flat cam pivotally mounted upon the swinging arm and arranged to engage the returned edge of the container at the opposite side thereof, said cam being arranged parallel to the side of the container and having a flanged portion which interlocks with the returned edge to prevent the earn from being swung outwardly when it is rotated into a locking position.
