VIOLIN-REST.

5PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,603, dated August 22, 1893.

To all whont it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERIO H. ISAAOS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Violin Rests or Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompa-- nying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in violin rests or holders; wherein the instrument, in use, is readily adjusted by the player to a correct position, effectually preventing side-slipping, and sliift-slipping,and giving the player a firm hold, and full control of the violin; and, as by using the devices, itdoes not come in contact with the person, it produces a better tune. Also the holder being attached over the block in the inside of the shell helps to improve the tone; and consists in an adjustable plate, or skeleton of a plate in place, situated on the back, or under side of the end,and a chin-plate on the upper side or belly of the instrument, with suitable adjustable, connecting and clamping devices, all substantially as, and for the purposes hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end or face View. Fig. 2 is an inverted view of the upper plate, as seen from the front. Fig. 3 is an under side View of the same. Fig. 4 is a detailed end view of the same plate, as seen from the left end. Fig. 5 is the inner, or upper side view of the lower plate. Fig. 6 is a plan of this plate, with the connecting parts removed.

In my construction A. is an adjustable plate, made of metal, or some other suitable material, which, by the hinge B. is jointed to a clamping-plate O, fitted to rest under the end of the back of the violin. This plate has upwardly extending screw-posts D. each, by a clamping-nut E, makinga connection with an upper-post section F. made to connect with bosses G. and G. depending from the plate H, which is made fast to the chin-plate I.

which is adjusted on the end of the belly of the instrument. This plate, made of metal or some other suitable material, is formed high on the right end, and low on the left, so that, substantially, it lies parallel with the plate A.-see Fig. 1; and its rounded upper surface, as shown particularly in Figs. 1 and t, is so fitted for an easy resting place for the chin or jawbone, in holding the instrument in playing, to prevent shift slipping, and has, as above-named, secured to it the plate H, and bosses G, and G. And to the boss G. is jointed the tongue L, seen especially in Figs. 2 and 3, as a part of the clamping device for attaching the holder to the instrument. To the adjustable plate A. is secured the segment of a gear It. and a horizontal thumbscrew K. is journaled to the posts D. and made to work in the teeth of the segment; and this serves to adjust the plate A. so as to support the violin, and hold it in a correct position on the collar-bone or breast, and prevent side-slipping. The screw also may so press the plate A, up against the instrument, that it will not be in the way when it is put in its case.

In attaching the holder the nuts E. are loosened or removed, and the clamping-plate O, carrying the plate A, is passed under the end of the violin, and the posts, nuts, segment and screw will lie up against the end of itsee Fig. 1; then the tongue L. jointed to the boss G. and standing out at an oblique angle from the plate I,see Fig. 2-is pushed under the end of the tail-piece O,and formed of the nut P. when the plate I. is brought down to its place, on the end of the violin, and the boss G. presses on the end of the tongue L. holding itin place, and clamping the plate I. to the instrument, when the nuts IE. will be put in place and tightened up, and the upper and lower sections carrying the plates A. and I. be clamped together, and the whole firmly united to the violin, over the block inside of the end of the shell S. of the violin. Under each part, that touches the shell, is put a cushion, of some suitable material, to prevent direct contact to injure the sound.

Some variation of the devices for adjusting and attaching the rest or holder "to a violin may be employed, and accomplish substan tially the same purpose, the value of the invention consisting in the lower and upper plates A. and I. for the purposes named; thereore \Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a violin rest, the adjustable plate or frame A. jointed, by the hinge B, to the clamping-plate C; and suitable devices for adjusting and attaching it to the end of an instrument, in combination with the plate I, substantially as specified.

2. The adjustable plate A. jointed to the clamping-plate O, having upwardly extending posts D: in combination with the posts carrying the plate I, substantially as named.

3. The plate A. jointed to the plate 0, and carrying the segment R. to be operated by the screw K. in combination with the posts D. substantially as, and for the purpose specified.

4. The plate I, for a chin rest, having the elevation on the right-hand end, and the de' pression on the left-hand end, and its rounded ouapvu upper surface, all substantially as set forth; and, in combination with this plate; the plate A. by means of the segment R. and screw K. in use, adjusted to lie substantially parallel with the plate I: substantially as set forth.

5. The plate I. to which is secured the plate H. having the bosses G. and G.and the screwpost-sections F. in combination with the posts D: and the tongue jointed to the boss G, adapted, when the plate Lis pressed down, to have the end held under the boss G. as set forth.

6. The combination of theplateA,theplate 0, segment R. screw K. plate 11. and plate I, and suitable connecting and clamping devices, as set forth.
