TELEPHONE-RECEIVER HOLDER.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JENNIE LEVY, .a citizen of the United States, residin inthe city and county of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Telephone-Receiver Holder, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention consists of a novel construction of telephone receiver holder which is provided with a stand or pedestal in which telescopes a post which latter car-- rise a novel construction of a holder consisting preferably of a thin band of flexible metal having portions to receive the telephone receiver in sucha manner that it will be resiliently clamped in position provision being also made whereby the holder can be adjusted with respect to the post which carries it, in order that the mouth of the telephone receiver may be presented at any de sired angle to the operator.

In telephones as ordinarily constructed and used it is necessary for the operator to remove the telephone receiver from the hook of the switchand to hold the receiver in close proximity to one of his ears and if the telephone conversation is long drawn out it is burdensome for a person to hold the telephone receiver in one position.

In accordance with my present invention as soon as the bell rings and the call is made the receiver is removed from the hook of the switch and placed on the support so that both arms of the person receiving the message are free for use in the making of notes or other purposes and in the case of a one arm person it is of special advantage since the one arm and hand of the person receiving the message is left entirely free to make notes, memorandums or calculations during the telephone conversation.

Other novel features of construction and advantagewill hereinafter more clearly appear in the detailed description of my in vention.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawing a typical embodiment thereof which is atfpresent preferred by me, since said embodiment will be found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results. It is, however, to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organizatate of tion of these instrumentalities as herein shown and, described.

Figure 1 represents, in side elevation, a telephone receiver holder, embodying my invention.

Fig. 4 represents a plan view of the blank from which the holder portion is formed.

Referring to the drawings,

1 designates the base of a telephone receiver holder embodying my invention said base having rising from it a tubular upright 2 into which telescopes a post 3 which is secured in its adjusted position by means of a set. screw 4 which is adapted to be manually manipulated. The top of the post 3 is preferably enlarged and has secured to it in any desired manner, for example, by spot welding, a plate 5, the opposite portions of which are upwardly and laterally deflected as at 6 in order to form a groove in which is slidably mounted the holder proper 7. This holder 7 comprises a thin sheet of'flexible material such as for example spring metal which is provided with the body portion 8 of substantially uniform diameter, said body portion having formed therein the slot 9 in order that itmay be adjustably secured on the plate 5 by means of the set screw 10 which is in threaded engagement with the threaded stud 11 which passes through the plate 5 and into the post 3 and is clamped in such post in any desired manner for example by means of a driving fit.

The holder 7 has at one of its free ends the enlargement 12 which is hollowed out as V at 13 in order to form the receiver conforming to the contour of the telephone receiver and the opposite end of the holder 7 is provided withthe head lowhich is recessed in a similar manner as. at 15 in order to conform to the contour of the telephone receiver 16. The blank from which the holder 7 is formed is bent into a curved formation so that the receiver 15 normally lies in a lower plane than the recess 13 so that the telephone receiver will be retained in an inclined positon which is the one best adapted for receiving the messages transmitted through the telephone receiver.

' on the plate The base, however, of the telephone receiver 16 can be operated as desired by loosening the nut 10, sliding the holder 7 5 and then tightening the set screw 10 and in order that the telephone receiver will be at a height which is best adapted for the person receiving the messages, the post 3 may be adjusted by means 6f the set screw 4 the result of which is evident. 7

It will be apparent that my novel construction of telephone receiver holder can be readily and economically manufactured since the holder 7 can be stamped out of sheet metal as well as the plate 5 which latter is then bent up so that it forms a guide and support for the holder 7 the opposite edges of the body portion 8 being guided in the slots formed by the deflected portion 6 of the plate 5.

By the use of my device the operator has both his hands free to manipulate a pen, pencil, typewriter or other desired mechanism for the purpose of making notes or memorandums and in the case of a person who has one arm such arm is free at all times to make notes or calculations during the telephone conversation. I

It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction of a telephone receiver holder which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that such embodiment is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. 7

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: V

1. A telephone receiver holder, comprising a base, a tubular upright on said base, a post vertically adjustable in said upright, a plate carried by said post, having its sides upwardly and laterally deflected to form guides, and a holder consisting of a strip of flexible sheet material engaging saidguides and having its free ends upwardly deflected and recessed to receive the telephone receiver and resiliently engage it, one end of said holder being lower than the other whereby. the telephone receiver is supported in an inclined position.

2. A telephone receiver holder, comprising a base, a post operatively connected with said base and vertically adjustable with respect to it, a holder slidably mounted on said base and having a longitudinally extending slot, a threaded member fixed to said post and passing through said slot, and a nut in engagement with said post to fix said holder in adjusted position, said holder comprising a strip of flexible metal bent to a curved formation and having its free ends recessed to receive and resiliently clamp in position'a telephone receiver.
