VIOLIN-HOLDER.
Application filed October 8, 1915.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NORTON R. GAYLORD, a citizen of the United States, and a resi dent of Eugene, in the county of Lane and State of Oregon, have invented a new and .Improved Violin-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a means to hold a violin on the shoulder of the player without the player clamping the violin beneath his chin.
In carrying out my invention a yoke is provided adapted to be supported on the shoulder of the player and a clamp is arranged to receive and hold the violin body adjacent to the tail-piece there being a member establishing connection between the yoke and the violin clamp and arranged to permit an adjustment to position the violin and yoke properly for the playing of the instrument, so that the instrument is properly held without the player clamping it beneath his chin.
The invention will be particularly explained in the specific description following.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a violin holder, constructed in accordance with my invention showing the same in use; Fig. 2 is a sectional side view; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of the yoke or support, and to be hereinafter referred to.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, a yoke 10, is provided which in this form of the invention is U-shape, presenting two depending legs which are provided with pads designated generally by the numeral 11. The yoke is adapted to be placed over the shoulder of the player so that the pads will be disposed against the body at the back and front respectively. The pads desirably include a dished metallic backing member 12, riveted or swiveled as at 13, to the offset ends of the legs, there being cushioning ma terial advantageously composed of an inner layer 14:, of cork applied to the members 12, and a facing 15, of felt or the like.
A clamp 16, is provided having means to receive and clamp the violin indicated by the letter A adjacent to the tailpiece a of the instrument. The clamp 16, comprises Specification of Letters Patent.

lower and upper lateral arms 16, 16, near the outer ends of which clamp jaws are provided on said arms. The lower jaw 17, is swiveled or riveted as at 18, to the lower arm 16 while the upper j aw or clamp member consists of a head 17, on a set screw 19, operating in the upper arm 16. The clamp elements 17, 17 may, in practice, be formed the same as the pads 11.
A member 20, establishes connection between the yoke 10, and the clamp 16, so that the clamp and the instrument held thereby, will be sustained by the supporting yoke 10. The connecting member 20, presents a lower lateral arm 20 and an upwardly extending member 20, so that said connecting memher is in the form of an angle piece which is formed preferably of stiff wire or from a round rod. On the top of the yoke 10, a sleeve 21, is swiveled and has a longitudinal through-bore accommodating the lateral arm 20 of the connecting piece. The connection permits turning and rocking of the yoke 10, or of the connecting piece 20, relatively to the said yoke, and a set screw 28 is provided in the sleeve 21 to bind against the arm 20", and hold the same in adjusted position. The upwardly extending member 20, of the connecting piece extends through a sleeve 24., which is swiveled or riveted as at 25, to the clamp 16, between the upper and lower arms thereof. By the described construction the yoke 10, is adjusted over the shoulder of the player with the clamp 16, and connecting piece 20, in position, and the violin body is placed between the clamp members 17, 17, and the clamp screw 19, tightened to securely hold the instrument. The violin may thus be held in any desired position for proper playing without the player pressing against the instrument with his chin.
In Fig. 8, a yoke 10, is provided, presenting a single depending leg having at the lower end, a pad 11 The leg 10, is adapted to be positioned in front of the player. At its upper end, the yoke is bent in the form of approximately a horizontal loop 10*, which is adapted to extend from the leg of the yoke around the neck of the wearer to the opposite side of the body from the pad 11 The terminal of the member 10 extends in a forward direction as at 10, and is provided with a sleeve 21, corresponding essentially with the sleeve 21, and riveted or swiveled to the terminal of the yoke as at 22*. The said sleeve has a transverse hole 28 to receive a set screw, such as 23. The yoke 10, with its sleeve 21", and neck loop 10*, is employed with the clamp 16, and connecting piece 20.
It will be seen that with the employment of the angle piece 20 with its arms respectively vertical and approximately horizontal, and in rigid relation to each other, there is provided a rigid member relatively to which the yoke adjustments and the violin clamp adjustments are made so that, notwithstanding the great flexibility resulting from the various adjustments provided, the support as a whole has the maximum stability and may be confidently relied upon by the player after a given adjustment has been effected.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A violin holder including a clamp adapted to receive and hold a violin body, a supporting yoke adapted to rest on the upper portion of the body of the player, and an intermediate member adjustably connected with the said clamp and yoke.
2. A violin holder including a clamp presenting lateral arms, spaced to receive a violin body and provided with clamp jaws to clamp the violin body, a supporting yoke adapted to rest on the upper portion of the body of the player, and means adjustably connecting the said clamp and yoke.
8. A violin holder including a clamp adapted to receive and hold a violin body,
a yoke adapted to be supported on the upper part of the body of the player and presenting a depending leg to bear against the body below the shoulder at the front and a connecting element having members re spectively connected with the yoke and the clamp.
4. A violin holder including a clamp adapted to receive and hold a violin body, a supporting yoke adapted to be positioned on the upper part of the body of the player,
an angle piece presenting lateral and n1 wardly disposed arms and means connecting said arms respectively with the said yoke and clamp.
5. A violin holder including a clamp adapted to receive and hold a violin body, a supporting yoke adapted to rest on the upper portion of the body of the player, an angle piece presenting lateral and upwardly disposed arms, means connecting the upwardly extending arm with the said yoke, and means to hold the lateral arm in adjusted position relatively to the yoke.
6. A violin holder including a supporting yoke adapted to rest on the upper portion of the body of the player and having a lateral sleeve thereon at the top, a clamp adapted to receive and hold a violin body and provided with a sleeve disposed approximately at a right angle to the sleeve on the yoke, and an angle piece between the yoke and clamp and presenting a lateral arm rockably received in the sleeve of the yoke and an upwardly extending arm rock-' ably received in the sleeve of the clamp.
7. A violin holder including a clamp adapted to receive and hold a violin body, a U-shaped yoke presenting depending legs provided with pads to bear against the front and back of the body of the player below the shoulder, a sleeve on the yoke at the top and provided with a set screw, an angle piece presenting a lateral arm receivable in the sleeve of the yoke adapted to be engaged by the said set screw, and a clamp adapted to receive and hold a violin body and provided with a sleeve, said angle piece having an upwardly extending arm received in the sleeve of the clamp.
