UNITED y STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK J. HERRICK, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE NORTH & JUDD MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
HORSE-BLANKET( BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,458, dated June 13, 1893. Application filed January 5, 1893. Serial No. 457,389. (No model.)
provement are simplicity of construction andgeneral efficiency and convenience in operation. Y t
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 11s l a front elevation of my buckleas applied to a Strap and portion of a blanket. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of said buckle on the line :t a; of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the principal part, and Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the fastening head.
A designates the blanket, and B, the strap secured thereto in connection with my buckle. The principal part of the buckle is provided with end loops 6 6 for the passage of the strap in securing the same to the blanket, which loops are connected by a middle portion in the form of curved side bars 7 7. The space between the side bars is widest towardy their upper end so as to form a narrow slot or space between the lower end of the side bars as shown. At the rear of the principalpart, I secure a spring S. The other part of the f buckle is a fastening head provided with a loop 9 for the attachment of the free end of the strap B, and a' projecting button like tongue l0, which is largest near its upper end, said tongue projecting from the loop 9 at the middle of the upper cross bar ofthe loop and in the same general direction as the plain of said loop. At the junction of said tongue and loop I form a forwardly projecting lug 1I for a finger piece.
The endl of the strap B containing the buckle proper is sewed securely to the blanket, while the end containing the fastening head is the free end of the strap. The greatest diameter of y the head 10 is wider than .the space between the side bars, so that when the parts are in the position shown in Figs. I, 2 and 3 they are securely held against accidental detachment. The curve of the side bars order to attach'the parts again, it is only necessary to draw up the free end of the strap and insert the button like end of the tongue IO between the upper ends ofthe sidebars and then pull it downwardly into place as shown.
While I prefer to employ the spring 8, it is evident that in some positions an efficient buckle would be formed without the employment of` said spring, the other parts being precisely the same as herein shown. While I have described the buckle as arranged up and down on the blanket, it is of course evident that the construction would be the same it' the buckle were used in a horizontal posi tion.
By my improVement,I not only produce a cheap and efticientbuckle, but by the employment of the lug 11 the head may be pushed lupwardly with the thumb or finger for detaching the parts, the construction' shown permitting this lug Il to be employed. The general form of the principal part of my buckle, consisting of the end eyes 6 6, the side bars 7 and the spring at the rear is shown and described in another application led by me and this application is made subordinatethereto.
I claim as my inventionl. The herein described buckle consisting of the principal part with the space between the side bars 7 contracted toward the lower end, and the fastening head 9 provided with a button like tongue IO adapted to engage said side bars on one side of said principal part and also provided with the finger piece Il, located on the opposite side of said bars from said button like tongue when said prinas described and for the purpose specified.
IOO
2. The herein described buckle consisting of the frame having the side bars 7, 7, with the space between them contracted at the lower end, the head 9, provided with acentral button like tongue for detaching and attacl1- ing it to and from said side bars and a spring arranged between said side bars with one portion back of the button portion of said tongue and another portion lying partially in front of the end of said tongue when the parts are secured together, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
