EDUCATIONAL CABINET SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,636, dated May 3 0, 1893.

Application filed January 12, 1893. Serial Nn. L158,170. (No model.) i V Be it known that I, CHARLES L. ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of IIi California, have invented an Improvement in Educational Cabinets; and I hereby declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the same.4

My invention relates to that class of educa tonalapparatus in which a traveling strip of paper iscontined within a casing and is viewed through a sight aperture.

My invention consists in the novel construction of the casing or cabinet, the arrangement ofthe paper therein and other details, all of which I shall hereinafter fully describe and shall specifically point out in the'claims.

The objects of Iny invention are, by the novel arrangement of the paper and the disposition of its supporting and guiding parts, to present a perfectly smooth unwrinkled surv face, to prevent the sagging of said paper, and

to hold it close up to the-sight aperture, to confine the paper roll closely and guide it accurately in unrolling, and generally to so simplify the 'device that its construction shall be practical and economical.

Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention,-Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of my educational cabinet on the line -x of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section on the line y-y of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an end View of the inner box section. Fig. 4 is a top view of the outer box section.

The box is a telescopic one composed of the outer section D and the inner section E. The outer section has its top cut out forming a sight aperture in which is a glass G. Extending between the ends of the inner section and notched into the tops thereof, as shown in Figs. l and 3, is a top partition C. Upon this lies a plate B, which is preferably a smooth sheet of stiff paste-board. One side b of this ner box section,thus forming in said section, as shown in Fig. 2, the two compartments e and e. The cornerswhere the plate bends over the partition are preferably rounded, as shown, in order `to present a smooth surface f`o`r the passage of the paper, and the top 'of said plate is smooth to smoothly directaud support the paper traveling over it. In comptrtment e of the inner box section is confined a roll J of paper,loosely placed therein, but sufficiently confined to ins-ure its accurate unrolling. In compartment e isa longitudinal shaft F jonrnaled at oneend upon a handled pin I, and at the other end upon a bearing screw or pin I-I. The end of the paper roll, lettered A, is carried up through pasthe shaft, passing in its course'under the sight aperture.

The points of advantage growing out of the construction and arrangement of parts shown and described may be briefly stated as follows: By the division of the box into compartments, I provide for the reception of a.

free paper roll without the presence of a separate shaft upon which to mount it and from which to unwind it. I thus dispense with the several shafts usually found in devices of this class, using but one shaft, namely, winding shaft F, while at the same time the paper roll is sufficiently confined, guided and directed to insure .its accurate nnrolling. This materially simplifies and cheapens the construction. By the employment of the bentplate B, I form the compartments in the simplest manner, and at the same time provide for the accurate direction of the paper, its position close up under the sight glass and its smooth unwrinkled surface thereunder, the rounded corners of said plate making the passage of the paper easy and free from the disadvantage of undue wear and tear.

Having thus described` my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An educational cabinet consisting of a box having a sight aperture in its top and divided longitudinally into compartmentshaving atop communication, a top support Within the upper portion of the box under its sight aperture, a free roll of paper lying in one of.' the compartments to rotate about an nnxed axis and having its end passing over thetop support into the other compartment, and a Winding shaft in said compartment upon which the paper is Wound, substantially as herein described.
