To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK R. WYCKOFF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings,city

5 and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music- Rolls, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings.

My invention relates to music-rolls, but" to more particularly to devices for preventing the music-sheet from unrolling after it has been rolled up.

The object of my invention is to enable the music-sheet to be maintained in a rolled condition by means independent of the musicsheet, but adapted to cooperate therewith and with the music-roll. My improved device may be maintained in position upon the roller when the music-sheet is unrolled, or it may be entirely removed from the roll.

Further objects of my invention will hereinafter appear; and to these ends my invention consists of the apparatus embodying the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts having the general mode of operation substantially as hereinafter fully described and claimed in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a music-roll provided with a fastening device embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a detail side view of the fastening device. Fig. 3 is an end view of the music-roll.

5 According to my invention any suitable music-roller may be provided with a device embodying my invention; but, as shown in the drawings, the music roller A is constructed to cooperate with the fastening de- 0 vice. The roller is provided with the musicsheet B, which is shown in a rolled-up condition. In order to maintain the sheet in the rolled condition, I utilize an improved fastening device C, which is a flexible band of such 4 5 construction that it may not only be increased and diminished in diameter, but it may be rolled longitudinally of the music-roll to any desired portion thereof to clasp the rolled sheet. When the music-sheet is to be unrolled, means are provided for holding the fastening device at one end of the roller, as

in the groove D adjacent the end flange E of the roller, the notches Q enabling the ring to be easily moved.

While the fastening device C may be made in different ways and according to different constructions, in this instance I have shown it composed of a spiral construction which is, in effect, a spiral spring. The spiral spring maybe made of Wire of any desired kind and then bent around in the form of a circle, as shown in Fig. 2, and the two ends of the wire joined at the point F. According to this construction it will be seen that the fastening device may be rolled along the music-roll from end to end, which is one of the great advantages of my construction. The device may be entirely removed from the music-roll by slipping it over one of the end flanges E of the roller. Being composed of metal, the fastening device is durable and will not wear out under constant use. It is flexible and strong and is not liable to be stretched out of shape.

Obviously some features of my invention may be used without others and my invention may be embodied in widely-varying forms.

Therefore without limiting myself to the construction shown and described or enumerating equivalents, I claim, and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, the following: '80

1. Thecombination with a music-roll, of a fastening device for maintaining the musicsheet in a rolled-up condition, said fastening device comprising a flexible elastic band or ring adapted to clasp the music-roll and capable of being rolled longitudinally of the roll while clasping the same and means at one end of the roll for seating the device, for substantially the purposes set forth.

2. The combination with a roller having a music-sheet, end flanges and a groove adjacent to one of the end flangesof the roller, a flexible elastic fastening device for maintaining the music-sheet in a rolled-up condition, said fastening device being in .the form of a 5 band or ring adapted to clasp the rolled musicsheet and capable of being maintained in said groove when the sheet is unrolled, for substantially the purposes set forth.

3. The combination with a music sheet and T00 roller provided with flanges and a groove adjacent one of its flanges, of a fastening device for maintaining the music sheet in a rolled up condition, said fastening device comprising a spirally-wound spring con nected inthe form of a band or ring, for substantially the purposes set forth.

4. The combination, with a music-roller for. carrying a music-sheet, of a fastening device for holding the sheet in rolled-up position, the said device being movable longitudinally on the roller, and means located outside the limit of the sheet for receiving and retaining the said fastening device in its inoperative position clear of the edge of the said sheet.
