MUSIC ROLL OR SPOOL.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES W DORRI- co'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Music Rolls or Spools, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to simple and improved means associated with a flanged spool or roll for causing a sheet, that is to be wound thereon, to wind accurately or evenly so that all the convolutions or windings of the sheet will closely hug the inner face of the flange at one end of the spool or roll.
The invention is especially useful in connection with the flanged rolls or spools that carry perforated music sheet-s such as are now commonly employed to control the operation of self-playing musical instruments, and l have elected to illustrate and describe the invention in this connection, although this showing is only by way of example and is not to be considered as in any way restrictive.
According to the present inventionl provide means associated with the flanged spool or roll, for causing one edge of the sheet that is being wound thereon, to be urged, during the winding operation, to-- ward and in contact with the inner face of the flange at one end of the spool or roll, so that the edges of the sheet throughout all the convolutions on .the spool or roll will accurately register.
Specifically stated the means referred to consists in providing the spindle of the roll or spool with an annularly arranged peripheral projection located at or near one end only thereof and adjacent one of the end-flanges. As a result of this construction that edge of the music sheet that is being wound about the spindle and over the annular projection, will lie in a plane above the plane of the convolutions wound about the other portion of the spindle, and it has been satisfactorily demonstrated that this has a tendency to cause the edge of the sheet overlying the said projection to crowd itself against the adjacent end-flange during the winding operation, with the result that all the edges of the several windings or convolutions will accurately register and Specification of Letters Patent.

this without overcrowding or breaking such edges.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to understand, make and use my said invention, I will now proceed to describe the same in detail reference being had for this purpose to the accompanying drawing wherein-- Figure l is a plan view of a music roll or spool made in accordance with the present invention, the same being shown in associati on with a tracker bar and a take-up roll of a musical instrument. Fig. 2 is a plan view on an enlarged scale of a music spool constructed according to the invention. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a music spool showing the music sheet par tially wound thereon. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view showing a slightly modified form of the inven ion.
Referring to the drawings the reference numeral 1 designates the spindle of an ordinary music roll or spool, said spool having end flanges 2 and 8, the latter of which is preferably made adjustable in any approved way. The roll or spool is provided at its opposite ends with centrally arranged journal pins a, as shown in Fig. 2, or it may be provided with sockets 5, at its opposite ends as shown in Fig. 8, to receive the usual j ournal pins forming a part of the winding mechanism of the musical instrument.
The spindle l of the roll or spool is provided at or near one end with an annular enlargement or peripheral projection, which according to the construction illustrated in Fig. 1, may consist of a ring or band 6, attached to the spindle in any suitable manner. This annular enlargement or peripheral projection is preferably arranged adjacent the fixed end-flange 2, of the spool.
Instead of the enlargement or projection being in the form of a ring or band attached to the spindle as illustrated in Fig. 2, it may be formed as an integral part of the spindle as illustrated in Fig. 3, wherein the numeral 7, designates the spindle and 8, the annular projection which is turned out as an integral. part of the spindle. As a further modified construction I contemplate making the peripheral projection in the form of an annular peripheral head 9, struck out from the material of the spindle 10, when said spindle is of tubular form as illustrated in Fig. 4. Obviously the annular enlargement or peripheral projection may take any one of a variety of forms and still accomplish the purposes of the present invention although it is important that its dimensions, so far as extent of projection from the plane of the spindle, is concerned, shall be within certain limits. In practice I have found a projection of about two thirty-seconds of an inch on a spindle of about one inch diameter as admirably accomplishing the purposes of the invention, although I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to these dimensions as I am aware that they may vary and the object of the invention still be accomplished.
The music sheet 12 is attached at one end to the spindle with one edge portion overlying the annular projection as shown in Fig. 3, and is preferably secured to the periphery thereof in any suitable way as by glue or otherwise, care being taken that the attached end is at a true right angle to the longitudinal edges of the sheet and that the edge lies closely adjacent or in substan tial contact with the inner face of the endflange 2. In attaching the end of the music sheet to the spindle I prefer to secure one or more turns or convolutions of the sheet, so that at the end of the spool having the peripheral projection, the diameter of the spindle, or that portion of the roll or spool upon which the free part of the music sheet is to be wound will be greater than the remaining portion of the spindle; or in other words, so that one end of the spindle adjacent one of the end-flanges only will be offset laterally with relation to the remaining portion of the spindle, and which remaining portion is of uniform diameter at its opposite ends.
By providing a flanged music-roll or spool with a peripheral projection or enlargement at or adjacent one of the end-flanges in accordance with the present invention, I have found that the music sheet will always wind accurately and evenly thereon with the edges of the several windings or convolutions in close contact with the inner face of the endfiange next adjacent the said projection, with the result that when the sheet is unwound from ofi its spool onto the take-up or companion roll 13, the note perforations in the sheet will register accurately with the ducts in the tracker board 14 of the musical instrument.
While I have shown the invention as applied to a music spool it is obvious that the same may be applied to the take-up roll.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise forms herein shown and described, except as I may be limited by the terms of the appended claims, as I am aware that the invention may take other forms without departing from the spirit thereof.
What I claim is 1. A roll or spool comprising a spindle provided with flanges at opposite ends thereof, said spindle having a fixed annular projection adjacent one of said flanges.
2. A. music roll for operating a playing instrument comprising a spindle having a flange at one end thereof, a music sheet adapted to pass across a tracker board and having perforations, said music sheet being attached at one end to said spindle, said spindle having a peripheral projection adjacent said flange adapted to maintain the edge of said music sheet against said flange and maintain proper alinement of said music roll in passing across the tracker board.
