PATENT OFFICE.
HALLIE .V. .D. CRUMBAUGH, or TERRELL, TEXAS.
THREAD-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1920.
Application filed October 20, 1917. Serial No. 197,681.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HALLIE V. D. CRUM- BAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Terrell, in the county of Kaufman and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread- Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a box particularly designed for holding yarn, crochet cotton or any similar type of thread and the primary object of the invention is to provide a box of neat appearance, which has a pair of bearings mounted therein for rotatably supporting a spool or rod upon which the thread has been previously wound, and which box is provided with an opening in the center of the cover, through which the thread may be drawn, while it is being used.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as Will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved thread box.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the thread box.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the thread box as an entirety, which may be constructed of celluloid, Parisian ivory or any suitable material and which box has a cover 2 mounted thereon which is held in closed position by any ordinary fastener structure 3. The side 4 of the box 1 has a bearing plate 5 attached to the inner surface of the same which bulges outwardly from the attaching fl.nge 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings and which is provided with a central opening 7 to receive one end of the spool structure 8. A second bearing 9 has its lower end attached to the inner surface of the side 10 of the box 1 as shown at 11 and the upper edge of this bearing is free, to allow it to be sprung toward the inner surface of the side 10 for disconnection with the spool 8. The spring bearing 9 is provided with a central opening 12 which receives one end of the central shaft 14 of the spool structure 8.
The spool structure 8 comprises the shaft or pin 14 and a pair of disks 15 which are mounted thereon in close proximity to the ends of the shaft to prevent the thread or yarn from being run off the ends of the shaft or pin. The ends of the shaft or pin 14 project beyond the disk 15 as clearly shown at 16, for seating in the bearing openings 7 and 12. If it is so desired, the shaft or pin 14 may be provided with notches as indicated at 17, to receive the initial winding of the thread, so as to cause the thread to start the proper winding upon the spool structure.
The cover 2 is provided with an opening 18 formed in the center of the top of the same out of which the thread extends and through which the thread is drawn while it is being used.
As will be noted, the spool and the supporting means therefor are positioned wholly within the casing or box so as to avoid all projections such as would tend to interfere with the handling of the device. Also this box has a relatively broad fiat supporting base so that it may be readily set down upon any suitable supporting surface for permitting the thread to be drawn through the thread opening 18, and this box is of smooth and unbroken contour being free of all sharp projections such as would tend to interfere With ready transportation of the device.
In reducing the invention, certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessitate alterations to which the patentee is entitled provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim is:
In thread holding means, a portable box having a flat supporting base and a removable cover, said cover being provided with a thread receiving opening, a thread receiving spool, and means positioned wholly within said boX for rotatably and removably supwhen the cover is applied'to the body of the porting said spool and friotionally engaging boxv 10 the spool, said boX being of smooth and un- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature broken c0ntour and .free of all projections in presenceof two witnesses.
such as wou ld tend to interfere with itmns- V. D. CBULDBAUGH. portation of the same, the opening in the Witnesses:
