To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EARL J. Dawson, a resident of New York city, county and State of New York, and a citizen of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Film Reels, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in reels for motion picture films, one of the objects being to provide a reel that can be taken apart for shipment or storage in order that the side disks,'forming part of the reel, can be shipped flat or stored away fiat, whereby a great saving of space is efiected. A further object of the invention is to provide an improved form of clip to secure the end of a film to the hub of the reel.

I will now proceed to describe my invention in detail, the novel features of which I will finally claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a sectional view of my improved reel, the section being taken on line 11 in Fig. 2; I

As herein constructed, my improved reel comprises disk-members 6 and 7 spaced apart to receive therebetween a film, and a hub member indicated generally by 8. The hub member 8 is made up of a core member consisting of head-

9 and 10 connected by a spindle 11; as a matter of fact, the

heads

9 and 10 are carried by the spindle at its ends. In this instance, head 9 carries an annular shoulder 12 at its outer end, and head member 10 carries a threaded projection 13 of smaller diameter. The head 9 engages an openin 6 in disk 6 and head 10 an opening "2' in. isk 7. The disks 6 and 7 are maintained in spaced relationship by a separator or sleeve 14.- which fits over

9 and 10, said sleeve being provided with a slot or'groove 15 in the bore thereof. The threaded projection 13 is engaged b a nut 16 which, when screwed home, tight y binds the disks 6 and 7, the disk 6 being held between shoulder 12 on head 9, and the adjacent end of sleeve 14, the disk 7 being held between nut 16 and adjacent end of le To fasten a film to the hub 8, I provide a clip 17 of channel or U-shaped formation to engage one end of sleeve 14, or rather to be held by sleeve 14 at one end thereof, as indicated in Fig. 1. The shorter leg 18 of clip 17 fits within slot 15 in sleeve 14, while 7 the longer yieldable leg 19 lies upon the outer surface of sleeve 13. The film to be fastened to the hub 8 will be flexed and passed under clip 17, as indicated by dotted lines 20, Fig. 1. I

Should it be desirable to store the reel or ship same in quantities, the nut 13 will be removed, after which the reel members can be taken apart. After the reels have been taken apart, the disks 6 and 7 can be piled up one upon the other. The disk 6 can be slipped off over head 10 and likewise slipped on over head 10.

What I desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a film-reel, a hub member, disks carried thereby, means to removably retain the disks in position upon the hub, a sleeve associated with said hub member, said sleeve being provided with. an interior channel, and

a clip disposed in said channel and having one end in resilient engagement with the exterior of said sleeve.

2. A hub member for a film-reel,- a core, a shoulder at one end of the core and a threaded projection at the other end of the core to receive a nut member, a spacing sleeve to fit over the core, all arranged to retain a disk between the shoulder and sleeve at one end of the hub, and another disk between the nut member and sleeve at the other end of the hub, and a clip carried by the sleeve having one of its ends located between the sleeve and core member of the hub.

3. A hub member for a film-reel, a core, a shoulder at one end of the core and a threaded projection at the other end of the core to receive a nut member, a spacing sleeve to fit over the ,core, all arranged to retain a disk between the shoulder and sleeve at one end of the hub, and another disk between the nut member and sleeve at the. other end of the hub, said sleeve havin a slot interiorly thereof, a channel shape clip having one end inserted in said slot and located between the sleeve and core member of the hub, the

other end of the clip being located on theexterior surface of the sleeve.
