TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1918.
Application filed November 13, 1917. Serial No. 201,827.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, -DORA E. SMALL, citizen of the United States, residing at Norwood, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to a toy and has for its object the production of a simple and elficient toy which will not only be amusing but may also be used'as an educational device.
Another object of this invention, is the production of a simple' and efiicient toy which is very compact in its nature and which is provided with an illustrating tape or belt capable of being moved across a viewing aperture, for passing a series of pictures under the viewing aperture.
With these and other ob ects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations ;and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure '1 is a top plan view of the toy,
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that 1 designates a casing which is provided with a. broad flat base plate 2 and this casing is provided with inclined side walls 3 which inclined walls 3 support a top plate 4. The top plate 4 is provided with a viewing a rture 5 within which viewing aperture 5 is placed a transparent plate 6. The plate 6 is provided with a notch 7 upon the under face thereof extending around the edge of the plate 6 for fitting upon the ledge portion 8 formed upon the top plate 4.
A. winding spool 9 is mounted upon a spindle 10, which spindle 10 is carried by one of the side walls 3 of the casing 1. The spool 9 is provided with ball-portions 11 at the respective ends thereof, thereby producing a reduced shank portion 12, upon which shank portion is wound the illustrating belt 13. An opening crank 14 extends through one of the side walls 3 and the inner end of this crank 14 is provided with a plurality of radiating fingers 15 which fingers conform to the shape of the ball-portion 11 and snugly fit thereover. These fingers 15 are secured to the ball-portion 11 by means of suitable pins 16. An unwinding spool 17 is mounted upon a spindle 18, which spindle is supported upon the walls of the casing 1. The unwinding spool 17 is provided with ball-portions 19 at its respective ends for producing a shank 20, to which one end of the illustrating belt 13 is secured. A coil spring 21 is secured at one end to one side of the casing 1 and is anchored at its 01)- posite end 22, to one of the ball-portions 19 of the spool 17. This spring 21 is adapted to return the illustrating belt 13 after the belt has been wound upon the spool 9, as soon as the crank 14 is released.
It of course should be understood, that any suitable illustration may be placed upon the belt 13, either of an amusing or educational nature. The illustrating belt 13 is wound from the spool 17 upon the spool 13, by operating the crank 14, and as soon as the crank 14 is released, the spring 21 will return or unwind the belt 13 from the spool 9 and wind the belt 13 upon the spool 17.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very simple and efiicient device in the nature ofa toy has been produced, which consists of a minimum number of parts and which may be very cheaply manufactured. By considering Fig. 3 it will be seen that the spindle 10 terminates short of the inner end of the spool 9.
The inner curved faces :23 of the ball-port'ons 11 and 19 will cause the belt to be wound upon the shank portions of the respective spools 9 and 17 without injuring the edges of the belt and at the same time hold the belt directly under the viewing aperture 5 formed in the-casing 1.
What is claimed is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a toy comprising a casing, said casing provided with a wide base and inclined walls, a top plate provided with an aperture formed therein, a transparent plate fitted within said aperture, a winding spool carried within said casing, an unwinding spool also positioned within said casing, an operatlng crank carried by said winding spool, a belt secured to said spools, and a coil spring secured to said casing and engaging said unwinding spool for unwinding said belt from said winding spool when said winding spool is released. a
2. As a new article of manufacture, a toy comprising a casing, a winding spool, an
unwinding spool, each spool provided with a ball-portion at each end thereof for producing a reduced shank, a belt secured at one end to said unwinding spool, a return spring cooperating with said casing, a plurality of gripping fingers radiating from said operating crank, said fingers conforming to the contour of one. of said ball-portions of said winding" spool, and fitting snugly thereover, and means for attaching said fingers to said winding spool.
3. A toy comprising a casing, a winding spool, an unwinding spool, a belt secured at its respective ends to said spools, each spool provided with a ball-portion at each end thereof, said ball-portions provided with inwardly curved inner ends for producing a reduced shank portion for said spools, and
said inwardly curved inner ends constituting a guide for holding said belt upon the shank portions of said spools and preventmesses ing the injury of the edges of said belt as the same is wound upon said spools.
4:, A toy comprising a winding spool, an unwindingspool, a belt secured at its respective ends to said spools, each spool provided with an enlarged portion at each end thereof, each spool also provided with a reduced shank portion intermediate the enlarged end portion for constituting a means for winding said belt thereon, and said enlarged ends constituting a means for preventing injury to the edges of said belt and holding said belt in proper alinement upon said spools.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
