.DOOR-HANG'ERR SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,467, dated May 30, 1893. Application filed August 20, 1892. Serial No. 443,556. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY L. FERRIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Harvard, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barn-Door Hangers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in barn-door hangers, its object being to pro- -vide a hanger in which the members attached to the door are so adjustable with reference to the parts supported by the track that the position of the door with reference to the vertical plane of the track may be readily changed as desired.

The invention is fully described and explained in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawings; in which- Figure l is a rear elevation of a carrier embodying my invention, the carrier being shown in operative relation to a door and track. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through the line 22, Fig. 1, the View being in the direction indicated by the arrow in said figure. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the line 3-8, Fig. 1, the View being in the same direction as in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical section between and parallel to the bars A, A, of the carrier; and Fig. 5 is an end elevation of a modified form of carrier.

In the first four figures, A, A are two par- .allel bars held together at their ends by clamping plates B, B, lying above and below the bars, the proper space between the bars being maintained by a flange b, formed on either one of the clamping plates and 1ying between the bars. Beneath the lower face of each of the plates B, lies a horizontal extension 0, formed on the upper end of a vertical bar 0, which extends downward and is adapted to be fastened to the outer face of a door. Each of the extensions 0', lies 'at right angles to the bars A, A, and is formed with a longitudinal slot S, Fig. 3, through which passes a bolt extending upward through the clamping plates B, B, and provided with a nut by means of which the extension 0, the clamping plates B, B, and the ends of the bars A, A, may be firmly fastened together. provide for the adjustment of the bars 0, O, with reference to the vertical planes of the bars A, A, for the purpose hereinafter set forth.

Each of the bars 0, O, is provided with a stop D, permanently fastened to it at a suitable distance below the bars A, A, and this stop serves as a gage for fastening the bars 0, O, to the door, it being only necessary to place the hanger in such a position that the stops D, D, shall rest against the upper edge of the door in the manner indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. These stops are a great advantage in the attachment of the hanger to the door as it is essential that the bars A, A, be parallel to the edge of the door, and that the two hangers which are fastened to the upper edge of each door be in the same line, and without the stops it is a matter of some difficulty to fasten the hangers in exactly the right position.

Each of the bars A, A, is provided with the usual dependent stirrup F, and the ends of the arbor g, of a roller G, lie in the spaces between the stirrups and the corresponding bars in a manner well known in this class of devices. The roller G, of each hanger rests upon a rail II, which may be of any desired form corresponding to the form of the roller and may be supported in any desired manner.

Fig. 5 illustrates a construction in which the two bars A, A, of the hanger are connected by means of an arched bar B which takes the place of the clamps B, B, and spacing lip b, of the device shown in the other figures. The bar B, has at its lower end a horizontal extension B beneath which lies the horizontal extension 0', of the bar 0 fastened to the door. The extension 0, is slotted as in the other figures and the bars 0, C, of the hanger may be adjusted with reference to the planes of the bars A, A, in the manner already described. In the device having the construction shown in this figure, a stop D, may, if desired, be fastened, to each of the bars 0, C, but I prefer to make the downwardly extending portion of the bar B of such length that the upper edge of the door may coincide with the upper face of the extension C, the joint between the parts B C,

being thus used as a gage for the attachment of the bars 0, O, to the door.

In the form shown in the first four figures it is possible to dispense with the clamping plate B, the upper face of the extension 0', of each of the bars 0, being then brought into contact with the lower edges of the bars A, A. I prefer, however, to use the clamping plates below the edges of the bars A, A, since these plates may be formed with upturned lips at their ends which prevent spreading apart of the ends of the bars-A, A.

It is evident that the adjustment of the bars 0, C with reference to the vertical planes of the bars A, A,'or with reference to the plane of the roller must correspondingly adjust the door with reference to the vertical plane of the track when all the parts are in working relation. The object of this adjustment is to compensate for irregularities in the door, or the wall along which it slides,

whetherthese irregularities be caused by warpingor in other ways. As a rule, at the time that doors are hung they are new and are practically plane, but it often happensthat after a period of use they are-so warped as to rub and grind against the parts beside which they move in opening and closing.

all such cases the adjustability which forms an important feature ofmy invention permits adjustment of the doors with very slight trouble.

Having now describedand explained my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a door hanger the combination with a roller-frame comprising two parallel bars and a roller lying between said bars and supported thereby, of transverse clamping plates lying above and across said parallel bars, members adapted to be fastened to a door 1 and provided at their upper ends with ex- 0', G, of bolts passing through said extensions and clamping plates and between said bars and ad justably securing the members, 6,
