DOOR HANGER. No. 350,860. Patented Oct. 12, 1886.

DOOR-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 350,860, dated October 12, 1886.
Application filed .Tannaryili, 1896. Serial No. 180.62.). (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1', JOHN J. BALDWIN, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Hangers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the class of door hangers which suspend the door from rollers or wheels mounted on a track arranged over the door; and the invention has special reference to the vertically-adjustable connection of the door with the hanger employed for raising or lowering the door to conform the bottom etge thereof to the floor over which it moves.
My invention consists in improved devices for adjusting the ai'ousaid connection of the door with the hanger, which devices are sim ple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, readily applied to a door without necessitating mortising to any considerable depth in the door, convenient of access for adjusting the same, and durable and effective in 7 their operation.
In the annexed drawings, Figurel is an elevation of a door-hanger embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line ax, 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the plate which is attached to the top edge of the door. Fig. it is a side elevation of my invention, showing its position on the door; and Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section of my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate correponding parts.
B represents a stout metal plate, which is mounted horizontally 011 the top edge, and with one end near the front edge of the door D, and secured in position by screws 1) b,passing vertically through suitable holes in said plate, and screwed into the upper part of the door. From the end of the plate B adjacent to the front edge of the door rises an upwardly-tapering socket, 0, preferably cast in one piece with the said plate,
F represents the hanger by which the door is suspended from a carriage or rider bar running on rollers It, mounted on the track T. The carriage of the hanger and its track rail may be of any ordinary and well-known style or construction, such being immaterial to my present invention. The hanger F terminates at its lower end with a horizontal offset, f, in which is a slot, 3, for the attachment of the coupling-pin A, which is provided at its upper end with a head, h, and has its neck under the head adapted to enter the slot 8, and when so entered the eoupling-pin A becomes suspended by the head 71 resting on top of the offset f of the hanger, as represented in Fig. l of the drawings. I do not, however, limit myselfmyself to the aforesaid manner of connecting the coupling-pin A with the hanger F, as this may be effected in various ways. The essential feature of said coupling-pin is its base or lower end, which is of the form of an upwardly-tapering block, A, adapted to enter the socket C. By means of a set-screw, (t, entering the socket at the side opposite the tapering side of the block A and bearing against said block, the latter is retained in the socket. By loosening the setscrew the door may be either allowed to settle, or raised, as may be required to adjust the door in its position in relation to the floor over which it is to move. By tightening the set-screw the door is retained in its adjusted position. The tapers ofthe socket C and block A, 1 make at the sides facing the front edge of the door, so as to place the set-screw facing in the same direction, and bring the manipir lating-head of said set-screw near. the upper corner and conveniently accessible from the edge of the door.
It is obvious that in lieu of the setscrew a. a wedge or key may be inserted between the block A and adjacent side of the socket" C, so as to tighten the hold of the beveled sides thereof; hence I do not limit myself to the employment of the set-screw c.
Having described my invention, what I claim is The combination, with the door-hanger, of a plate adapted to be secured upon the top edge of the door, an upwardly-tapering socket attached to said plate, a coupling-pin suspended from the liangelyand having its lower end tapered upwardly and inserted in the aforesaid socket, and a set'sorew entering the socket to bind the aforesaid coupling-pin there- 5 in, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in thepresence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga,in the State of New York,
this 23d day of January, 1.886.
