United States Patent SLIDING DOOR HANGER Loyce S. Tompkins, Hialeah, Fla.
Application October 15, 1951, Serial No. 251,354
1 Claim. (Cl. 16-105) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in sliding door hangers and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character which may be expeditiously and accurately adjusted as desired to meet various conditions and which may be firmly secured in adjusted position.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a door hanger of the character set forth wherein but one adjustment is necessary and which may be readily made through the medium of a single set screw.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an adjustable sliding door hanger of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured and installed at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in vertical section through a door hanger constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view, looking at the invention from the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view through the upper portion of the device.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a metallic sleeve 5 which is mounted on top of a sliding door 6. The door 6 has formed therein a socket 7 which is aligned with the sleeve 5.
The sleeve 5 is in the form of a square boss 8 which is formed integrally with a base plate 9, which base plate is firmly secured in position on top of the door 6 by countersunk screws 10.
Adjustably mounted in the sleeve 5 is a metallic rod 11. The socket 7 accommodates the rod 11. An Allen 2,697,848 Patented Dec. 28, 1954 set screw 12 secures the rod 11 in adjusted position in the sleeve 5.
The rod 11 terminates in a laterally off-set, flattened upper end portion 13 having fixed thereon a laterally extending spindle 14. A roller 15 is journalled on the spindle 14. Ball bearings 16 are provided between the roller 15 and the spindle 14. The roller 15, which includes a substantially V-shaped periphery, travels on an overhead track 17.
It is thought that the operation of the invention will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefiy, the rod 11 may be slidably or rotatably adjusted in the sleeve 5 by simply loosening the set screw 12. Of course, the set screw 12 is again tightened to secure the adjustment. Of course, any desired number of the hangers may be installed for suspending the door 6 from the track 17 and the construction and arrangement is such that the hangers will be inconspicuous if not completely concealed from view.
It is believed that the many advantages of a sliding door hanger constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A hanger for a sliding door having a vertical socket of a substantial depth in its upper end portion, said hanger comprising a base plate adapted to be secured longitudinally on the upper end of a door over the socket therein, an upstanding boss rigid with said base plate, said boss and base plate having therethrough a smooth bore alignable with the socket, a smooth, vertical stationary rod mounted for rotary and sliding adjustment in the bore and adapted to extend into the socket, a set screw threadedly mounted in the boss for releasably securing the rod in adjusted position, a lateral spindle on the upper portion of said rod, and a roller journaled on said spindle and operable on a track.
