Description

W. G. DUNN.
Railway Rail-Joints.
No. 145,339. Parented,nec.9,1a73.
UNITED STATES PATENT EEIGEo W'ILLIAM Gr. DUNN, OF FAIRLAND, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO GRANVILLE S. HARRALL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILWAY-RAIL JOINTVS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,339, dated Dccclnber 9, 1873; application lcd August 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. DUNN, or" Fairland, county of Shelby, State of Indiana, have invented au Improvement in Joints for Railroad-Rails, of which the followin g is a specication The nature of theinvention will be fully un derstood from the following general description and the accompanying drawings. p .Y
Figure 1 is a top View of parts of two adjacent T-rails with my device attached; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the same; Fig. 3, a detailed view of plate a.
A chair is to be made, as represented by o e, upon which rest the T-rails d, as shown in the drawing. One side of the dovetail of the chair, at e, is adapted to the edge of the rail (Z, the other to the edge of the plate a., as shown at o. Then the T-rail has been properly placed on the chair, the segmental rail b, which is adapted to it, is placed against it, so as to break the joint at c, as represented. Against this segmental rail b is placed one edge of the plate a. The other edge of a is placed against o, as shown in the drawing. The plate a is then to be strained down by bolts passing through it and the bottom of the chair until the two ends of the rails and the various parts of the device are rmly fastened in their places. It will then be found, first, that the device is so arranged as to form a superior compound joint, a, &c.; second, that the construction and arrangement of the device is such that the T-rails d, the segmental rail b, and the plate a forni a perfect arch, resting on the chair 0 c, which will not allow either end of the rail to sag out of ballast as long as the bolts holding the platea-re kept tight and the device remains entire.
I claim- The combination and arrangement fofthe plate a, the chair 0 c, the segmental rail b, and the T-rails d and d, for the purpose and in theinanner substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing specification I have hereunto set my hand this 4th. day ot' June, 1873.
W. e. DUNN.
