COLUMBUS ALEXANDERWAYLAND, OF MIDDLESBOROUGH, KENTUCKY.
PICTURE-FRAME CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 490,519, dated January 24, 1893.
Application filed March 25, 1892. $eria1 NO- 426.400. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, COLUMBUS ALEXANDER WAYLAND, of Middlesborough,in the county of Bell and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Frame Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in picture frame clamps: and it consists in certain novel features of construction which will be fully described hereinafter, and more particularly referred to in the claims.
The object of myinvention is to provide an improved device which may be readily adj usted for clamping frames of different sizes While being glued or nailed, and which will hold the same firmly together as long as desired.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,- Figure 1, is a perspective view of my improved clamping table. Fig. 2, is a plan View of the same. Fig. 3, is an inverted view of the table top. Fig. 4, is a detail view of one of the clamping dogs.
A, represents the side rails of the table having the vertically extending tracks or flanges B, and 0, represents the end of the table frame. Mounted on one end of'the frame is the stationary top portion D, and upon the other end is the longitudinally moving top section E, which rests upon the track B; extending inward from each of the outer corners of these top sections are the converging blocks F, which are made flush with the top surface of the table and which are formed with the slots G, as shown.
H, represents a screw shaft which is journaled at its inner end in the block I, on the under side of the section D, and at its outer end on the end 0, of the frame. This shaft Works in a threaded boxing J, on the under side of the top portion E, so that by revolving the said shaft the section E, is adjusted in relation to the section D, which is stationary.
The frame clamps proper consist of the clamping heads H, having shanks L, which extend down through the slots G, in which they move and formed at the lower ends of the shanks-are the screw threaded sleeves K.
L, represents screw shafts which are beneath the slots G, and which work through the sleeves K, and by this means the clamping heads are adjusted toward or away from the center of the table as may be desired. These shafts are journaled at their inner ends to the blocks I, J, on the respective table sections and at their outer ends to the ends of the blocks F. Each shaft is provided with an operating wheel M, on its outer end as shown. In order to prevent the moving section E, from jumping up while a frame is being clamped I provide the depending straps N, which are turned under the side rails A, and by this means any vertical movement of the section is prevented. From the fact that the table sections are adjustable in relation to each other in addition to the adjustability of the clamping heads it will be seen thatthe dimensions of the table can be expanded to accommodate a very long and wide frame.
The edges of the slots G, in the blocks F, are provided with scales as shown so that the corner clamps may be readily and accurately adjusted to equal distances from the center of the table.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a picture frame clamp, the combina tion of a support, the top sections or tables, the converging wooden blocks F rigidly secured in slots in said tables, as described, so as to be approximately flush. with the upper faces of said tables and projecting outwardly beyond the edges of the tables, as shown, each block longitudinally slotted, sliding clamps on the blocks having shanks extending down through the slots provided with threaded sleeves beneath the same, each block having a threaded shaft L extending along its under side and beyond the outer end thereof and through the threaded sleeve and journaled at the ends of the block, substantially as shown and described.
2. In combination, the support having the ways, the stationary table D, the table E movable on said ways, the tables D, E, respectively, having the rigid blocks I, J, centrally at their adjoining edges, the screw shaft H passing through a threaded opening in block J and journaied in block I, the converging I or J, as and for the purpose shown and dem slotted blocks F secured in the tables and scribed.
abutting against the respective blocks I, J, In testimony whereofI aifix my signature in the clamps on said blocks extending through presence of two witnesses.
the slots therein and the screw shafts L controlling said clamps and located 011 the COLUMBUS ALEXANDER WAYLAND' under sides of the blocks F, and at their outer Witnesses: ends journaled to said blocks and at their iu- HENRY STEELE, ner ends journaled in their respective blocks H. J. MERWIN.
