SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,471, dated J une 23, 1896.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL P. ]LERCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miter-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing the Fig. 2 is a vertical section showing a portion of the vertically-adj ustable shaft and the transverse section of the upper cross-bar, also showing the position of the ball-bearings. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of one arm of the sawguides. Fig. 4. is a detached View showing the bottom or lower portion of one of the sawgnides. Fig. 5 is a view showing a portion of the vertically-adj ustable shaft, also showing the disk through which said shaft is passed and device for holding the saw-guide at the desired angle. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of the adjustable shaft and its disk.
The present invention has relation to miterboxes; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in all the figures of' the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the base or bed, which may be constructed in the ordinary manner and is provided with the usual right-angled iiange a, said flange 'being provided with the opening t, or, if desired, two iianges may be attached to the bed A, said flanges being separated a short distance apart. To the rightangled flange a, are attached the short posts B, to which posts are detacliably connected the posts or standards B, by means of the pins b or their equivalents. The top or upper ends of the posts or standards B are held in proper position with reference to each other by means of the crossbar c, which cross-bar is detachably connected to the top or upper ends of the posts or standards B by means of the pins b2.

bar cis provid ed with the aperture c', through which aperture the vertically adjustable shaft or bar C is passed, said shaft being located and arranged substantially as shown in Fig. l. To the bottom or lower portion of the shaft C are attached the saw-guides D, which saw-guides may be of the form shown in Fig. l, and are clamped together by means of the clamping-bolts d, which clamping-bolts are located as illustrated in Fig. l. The bottom or lower ends of the saw-guides D are provided with the integral plates d, which plates are provided with suitable recesses to receive the balls d2, which recesses form suit able sockets for said balls.
It will be understood that when the sawguides D are placed together, as illustrated in Figs. l and` 3, the balls d2 cannot become detached from their sockets, but at the same time a sufficient amount of the surfaces of said balls will be exposed to form suitable bearings and guides for the saw.
In Fig. 3 I have illustrated a back-saw placed between the guide-arms, and for the purpose of providing bearings for the under edges of the back c of the saw the balls f are provided, and are located substantially as shown in Fig. 4. It will be understood that balls, such as f, are to be placed in the opposite guide, as illustrated in Fig. 3.

Vhen it is desired to change the angularity of the saw-guides D, the pin h is elevated, thereby allowing the saw-guides to be turned at an angle with reference to the two, the collar 7o is adjusted upward the distance the saw is to cut, after which the saw is placed in position, or if desired the saw may be in position after the collar is adjusted, as it is immaterial at which time the collar la is adjusted. As the saw descends or cuts its way into the wood, the saw-guides D will follow the downward movement of the saw until the collar 7c comes in contact with the upper side of the cross-bar, thereby limiting the downward movement of the sawguide and gaging the depth of the kerf to be cut. For the purpose of providing an easy movement for the shaft C, said shaft is provided with the grooves 7a2, which grooves are for the purpose of receiving the ball-bearings 7a3, as illustrated in Fig. 2, said ballbearings being located in proper recesses or sockets formed in the cross-bar c.
It will be understood that the shaft C is to be provided with a scale showing the number of inches and fraction of inches, so as to provide `an easy and convenient means for adjusting the collar 7c. It will be understood that as the saw descends the shaft C, together with the saw-guides D, and the bar E, with its adjustment, follow the downward movement of the saw, thereby holding the saw in a true 'vertical position until the saw has fully entered the timber, and in instances where the saw is not to be entered its entire width the guides will at all times be in proper position to hold the saw in a true vertical position and at the desired angle to the bed A.
For the purpose of providing a miter-box that can be easily transported or placed in a tool-chest, the posts or standards B are removably connected to the posts B, and ther cross-bar c is also removably attached to the top or upper ends of said posts, thereby providing means for removing the cross-bar c, after which `the shaft C, together with its attachments, can be removed, thereby providing a knockdown initer-boX.
The bottom or lower end of the shaft C is provided with the groove H, which groove receives the inner end of the set-screw II', as shown in Fig. 6, thereby allowing the sawguides D to be turned upon the shaft C, andv if desired said set-screw can be turned sufficiently to tighten the saw-guides and prevent i provided and is ,located around the pin h, as illustrated in the drawings.
The balls f, located in the lguides D, are so arranged that the bottom or under edges vof the back rib of the saw will rest or ride on said balls.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the bed A, provided with the right-angled flange a, the posts B, connected to the flange, the detachable Posts or standards B', the detachable cross-bar c, connected to the top or upper end of the posts or standards B', and provided with the balls 7a3, the shaft C, provided with the longitudinal grooves 7a2, the sliding cross-bar E, connected to the bottom or lower portion of the shaft C, and provided with the notched disk F, the bar G, provided with the arms h, the pin h and the spring h2, located around said pin and between the arms h, and the sawguides D, pivotally connected to the bottom or lower end of the shaft C, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a vertically-adjustable scaled shaft provided with longitudinal grooves, the cross-bar c, provided with the balls 7a3, the saw-guides pivotally connected to the bottom or lower end of the shaft C, and the sliding bar E, provided with the notched disk F, and means for holding said guidearms at the desired point of angularity, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a miter-boX, the combination of a bed provided with a right-angled flange, posts or standards secured to the right-angled fiange, asliding bar provided with a notched disk, the bar G, provided with the arms h, the pin h' and the spring h2, the shaft C, provided with an adjustable collar, the cross-bar c, and the vertically-adjustable pivotcd saw-guides D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a miter-box, the combination of a bed provided with posts or standards, cross-bars connected to said posts or standards, a verticallyadjustable shaft provided with sawguides, having the balls f, and d2, the balls f located to receive the lower edges of the back rib of the saw, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. In a ruiter-box, the combination of a scaled shaft, vertically adjustable and provided with the longitudinal grooves, the balls 7c3, and the adjustable cross-bar c, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
