II ITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
MARIA RICHARDSON, OF HELMICK, KANSAS.
STAY FOR BED-SLATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 609,703, dated August 23, 1898.
Application filed November 16,1897. Serial No. 658,770. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARIA RICHARDSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Helmick, in the county of Morris and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stays for Bed-Slats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification.
My invention relates to stays for bed-slats and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same by which the slats may be securely held in place without liability of falling outor becoming displaced and the bedstead be strengthened and braced, whereby all liability of the side rails spreading will be obviated.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a portion of a bedstead, showing myimprovements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the angle-stay detached from the bed-slat. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the plate to be secured to the side rail of a bedstead and provided with a lug adapted to engage with the stay. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of said plate.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the side rail of a bedstead of any ordinary or suitable construction, and 2 one of the slats thereof.
The numeral 3 designates the stay, consisting of an angular casting comprising the horizontal portion 4, formed with holes for the passage of screws for screwing it to the bed slat, and the vertical portion 5, formed with inwardly-extending flanges 6 on the outer side with a central space or slot 7 and forming a recess closed at the upper end by the transverse portion 8, the edge of which projects outwardly beyond said flanges.
The numeral 9 designates a rectangular plate secured to the side rail by screws 10 and provided with a rectangular lug 12, secured thereto by a rivet 13.
Of course the other side rail of the bedstead and the other end of the slat (not shown) are also provided with similar plates and stays.
' The manner of using the device will be readily understood. The stay is secured to the end of the slat by means of screws and the plate secured to the side rail. To engage the stay with the plate, the lower open end of the vertical portion of the stay is brought into alinement with the lug 12 and the slat and stay pushed downward, the lug sliding up in the recess formed by the flanges and the rivet working'in the central opening or slot until the projecting edge of the transverse portion 8 comes in contact with the up per edge of the plate 9, whereby the movement of the stay will be stopped and the slat be securely supported. The lug 12 will also prevent any spreading of the side rails.
In practice it is intended that the stays shall ,be secured to one of the slats nearest the center of the bedstead; but all the slats may be provided with the stays, if desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim is- In a bedstead, the combination with the slat, the angle-stay secured to the end thereof formed with a vertical portion, two inwardlyextending flanges with a central slot between the inner edges and forming a recess open at the lower end, and the transverse portion closing the upper end of said recess and its edges projecting beyond said flanges and engaging with the upper end of the plate secured to the side rail, of the side rail, the plate secured thereto, the rectangular lug engaging with the recess in the stay, and the rivet securing said lug to the plate, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARIA RICHARDSON.
