UNITE TATES PATENT FFICE.
JAMES R. MCGREGOR, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
LAM P-SU PPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,196, dated May 9, 1893. Application filed January 26, 1893- Serial No. 459,886. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES R. MCGREGOR, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lamp- Support, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved lamp support, which is simple and durable in construction, and more especially designed for use on sewing and other machines, for conveniently supporting the lampin such a manner that the lamp does not interfere with the work on the sewing table and at the same time the rays of the light are thrown to the proper place.
The invention consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a transverse section of the improvement as applied and on the line 22 of.
Fig. 2. Fig.2 is a rear elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same with parts broken out.
The improved lamp support is provided with a bracket A, preferably made U-shaped and having its flanged ends A secured by screws, bolts, or other means to the under side of the table B of a sewing machine, at the rear side thereof, as plainly shown in the drawings. The middle part A of the bracket A is formed with a transversely-extendi11g slot A into which is fitted a horizontally-extending arm C, having a slot 0', through which passes a suitable bolt D, also passing through a vertical slot A formed in the middle part A of the bracket A. By means of this bolt D the arm C- can be securely locked in place on the middle part A of the bracket A and when the said screw or bolt D is loosened, the arm 0 can be moved laterally or shifted longitudinally with the bolt in the vertical slot A of the bracket A.
On the free end of the arm 0 is secured a vertically-extending socket E in which is fitted to slide the shank F carrying a stand or platform G at its upper end, the said platform being adapted to conveniently support the base of a lamp II of any approved eonstruction. On the shank F is secured a pin or screw I projecting through a vertical slot E formed in the socket E, the said pin or screw being adapted to be seatedin inclined branch slots E leading from one side of the vertical slot E, as plainly illustrated in Fig. 1. Thus, by the operator taking hold of the pin I and turning the shank F to move the pin from the branch slot into the vertical slot E, the shank with the platform and lamp can be raised or lowered so that the light of the lamp is thrown into the proper place on the work. When the lamp has been vertically-adjusted the pin I is moved into the corresponding angular branch slot E which thus supports the shank F in .place. It will be seen that by this arrangement the lamp can be raised or lowered so that the rays of the light fall to the proper place on the work on the table B.
Having thus fullydescribed my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with the hanger or bracket having its cross bar A formed with two intersecting longitudinal slots A A of the horizontal longitudinally slotted arm C extending through the slot A and provided at its outer end with a depending socket, a set screw extending through the slots A and O and a lamp stand having a shank adjustable vertically in the said socket, substantially as set forth.
2. A lamp support consisting in the hanger or bracket A having supporting arms A and cross bar A provided with two intersecting longitudinal slots A. A, the horizontal longitudinally slotted arm 0 extending through the slot A and havinga vertical socket E on its outer end provided with intersecting longitudinal and lateral slots E E the set screw D extending through the slots A G and the lamp stand G having a shank entering socket E and provided with a lateral pin workingin said slots E E substantially as set forth.
