Description

H. CAMPBELL.
BRACKETS FOR HOLDING LAMPS. Nu .179,471. Patented July 4,1876.
' M/ fw/mf N- FETERS. PHOTD-LITFOGRAPMER. WASHINGTON, D. O.-
UNITED STATES PATENT FFIGE IMPROVEMENT IN BRACKETS FOR HOLDING LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I 79,471, dated July 4, 1876; application filed December 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY CAMPBELL, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Brackets, of
which the following is a description sutficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an isometrical perspective view.
My invention relates principally to that class of brackets which are designed for holding lamps, flower-pots, &c.; and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a simpler, cheaper, and more efi'ective device of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of my invention will be readily obvious to all conversant with such matters from the following description.
In the drawing, A represents a table or shelf by which the bracket is supported 5 B, the body of the bracket, and F the arm. The lower portion of the body is U-shaped, forming a bow or clamp for grasping the edge of the table, and for that purpose is provided with the thumb-screw J, the upper portion being elongated to form the standard C. The arm F is arranged to swing freely in a horizontal direction by means of a vertical pintle, 01, (only partially shown,) which is fitted to work nicely in a hole or socket in the upper end of the standard, and is rendered adjustable therein by means of the set-screw D. The outer or free end of the arm is provided with two elastic clamps or holders, G H, arranged horizontally on the stud a. The ends of these clamps are curved or bent upwardly, and are designed to grasp and hold the lamp or flowerpot carried by the arm, and for that purpose may be moved independently of each other, as shown by the dotted lines, thus enabling the lamp, or other article, to be easily introduced.
It will be obvious that my improvement is especially adapted for use with sewing-machines, as well as in nearly any position where a portable lamp is required, being readily and easily attached to the side of a table or shelf, and adjustable both vertically and horizontally by means of the screw D.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is 1. The improved bracket described, consist ing of the body A, provided With the screwJ, standard C, and screw D, in combination with the arm Fprovided with pintle d, and clamps G H, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
2. In a bracket, substantially such as described, the arm F providcd with the elastic clamps G H, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth and specified.
HENRY CAMPBELL.
