CHIMNEY ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,887, dated April 18, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SOLOMON R. HEBERLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Steuben and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in chimney attachments; and it has for its object to provide a device which may be attached to chimneys already built, or applied to chimneys being built, with equal facility.

The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts that are more fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.

Fig. 3, is a view of the chimney with the face plate removed. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the stove pipe clamping-device. Figs. 5 and 6, are views of a modified form of fastening device for securing the face plate to the chimney.

In the construction shown I employ a skeleton casting or frame A which is secured in the wall of the chimney, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, its forward edge projecting beyond the outer edge of the brick work of the wall a distance equal to the thickness of the plastering. This casting consists of the upper open circular frame or part a, through which the stove pipe is passed, and the lower open rectangular frame a through which the soot receptacle is passed; and these frames are connected at the middle of their adjacent edges by the vertical rib a". This casting is preferably equal in depth to the thickness of the wall in which it is to be secured. The plate (1 is designed to retain the stove pipe in place in the opening I), and is clamped down on the pipe by the thumb screw f which passes'vertically through the collar 17", at the upper side thereof, its inner end bearing on the upper side of the plate (1, its upper outer end being provided with the usual thumb piece, as shown.

The plate at when it is clamped to the stove pipe not only retains the said pipe in place, butit also prevents the passage of soot from the chimney into the room, by covering the opening between the stove pipe and the edge of the opening b of the face plate.

Formed on the face plate B on the inner side thereof, at the lower corners of the opening 1), are the inwardly projecting, angle plates 1) These plates project inwardly a suitable distance and support and guide the soot receptacle 9.

The soot receptacle consists of a rectangular pan h, secured to a face plate 'i by the bolt j which also secures the knob or handle to the face plate 2'. The pan h is preferably large enough to extend across the opening of the chimney in order to catch whatever soot there may be in the chimney. The face-plate i is recessed on its inner side at i to fit closely in the opening I) to prevent the passage of soot into the room.

In Figs. 5 and 6, I have shown a fastening device to be used on chimneys already built. In this construction I employ a bar m which is placed across the stove pipe opening in the chimney at the inner side thereof, and pass bolts it through the face plate and the wall of the chimney and thebarm, and securely clamp the plate B to the chimney wall.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of a casting built into an opening in the chimney and consisting of an upper circular frame and a lower rectangular frame connected together by an integral web, a face-plate bolted to the casting and provided with a circular opening coinciding with the. upper frame of the casting and a lower opening opposite the lower frame said face-plate having formed integrallywith it inwardly projecting supporting plates resting in one of the frames of the casting, and a sootpan inserted in the loweropening and frame, substantially as described.

2. The combination of a chimney having an upper and lower opening, aface-plate removably secured to the chimney over the openings therein, this plate being provided with openings coinciding with the openings in the chimney, supporting plates projecting from the inner side of the face-plate and resting in one of the chimney openings, and a soot-pan fitted in the lower opening of the chimney and faceplate, substantially as described.
