J. H. MAGINLEY & 0. P. ELLIOTT.
CIGAR MOLD.
No. 245,526. Patented Aug. 9,1881.
A NITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
JOHN H. MAGINLEY AND CHARLES P. ELLIOTT, OF NORRISTOW'N, PA.
MOLD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent No. 245,526, dated August 9, 1881. Application filed May 7. 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN H. MAGINLE and OHARLEs 1 ELLIOTT, both citizens of the United States, residing at Norristown, in the county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigar-Molds, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end view of a cigar-mold having our invention applied to it. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the mold and one end fastening, the other end fastening being in vertical section. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of one of the fastenings.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to fastenings for sectional cigar-molds; and it consists, mainly, in attaching a spring-latch to one of said sections and combining it with a plate with which it engages on the other section, said latch being made in two pieces, so as to be adjustable.
Referring to the drawings, A and B represent the sections of a cigar-mold of usual construction. To each end of one secti0nsuitably the lower one-is secured a horizontal plate,O,havin g an outwardly-projectingflan ge, a, and downwardly-extending lips I). To each end of the other section is secured a plate, 1), somewhat U-shaped, curved or angular, with-' in which, at the upper end,is pivoted or hinged a depending latch or latching-plate, E, the nose 0 of which is below and occupies a coincident position with the flange a.
Connected to the latch E and plate D is a spring, F, which in the present case is coiled around the pintle or axial pin of the latch E, and its object is to force the latch inwardly.
The latch E is made of two parts, 61 6, one part being flanged and perforated, as at d, and the other part fitted within the flanges and vertically slotted, as at f, there being passed through the slot a screw, G, which is connected to the perforated part of the latch, whereby provision is made for adjusting the length of the latch relatively. to the thickness of the cigar, dimensions of the mold, &c. The nose 0 is formed on the lower end and inner face of the lower part, c, and is in one piece therewith.
On the inner face of the latch is a horizon- H tally-projecting lug, H, which is adapted to stop against the end of'the section of the mold and thus limit the inward motion of the latch, whereby, when the sections of the mold are separated, the latch preserves a proper upright position, and is thus so set that when its nose strikes the plate 0 of the other section the engagement of said latch and the counterpart plate 0 may be reliably accom- 6o plished.
It will be seen that when the two sections of the mold are properly and fully brought together the latches E are forced outwardly,
and when they clear the edges of the flanges of the plates 0 their noses catch under said flanges, thus positively connecting the two parts of the fastening and securely holding the sections of the mold.
In order to disconnect the sections, the latohesE are drawn outwardly, and thereby cleared of the flanges of the plates 0, thus per mittin g the upper section to be lifted from the bottom section, as is evident.
The attaching-plates D have on their lower edges inwardly-projecting horizontal lips g, which bear against the lower side of the upper section of the mold, and the attaching-plates C have on their under sides the downwardlyprojecting or vertical lips I), which bear against the outer sides of the lower section of the mold. By this provision the plates are firmly secured to the mold and may be uniformly located at the required place on each mold, so that the latches and flanged plates occupy coincident 8 5 positions.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The sectional cigar-mold, in combination with a curved or angular plate, D, a latch pivoted in said plate and consisting of parts d e, adjustably connected, a plate, 0, engaged by said latch, and a spring, F, forcing said latch toward said flanged plate, substantially as set forth.
2. A sectional cigar-1nold,'in combination D being attached. to the other section of the 10 with a latch pressed inward by a spring, and mold and having inwardly-extending lips g, having a projecting lug, E, that bears against to insure the placing of latch E and flange a said mold to hold said latch in vertical pcin proper position for engagement.
JOHN H. MAGINLEY.
sition.
3. A sectional cigar-mold, in combination CHAS. P. ELLIOTT. with latch E and plates 0 D plate 0 being Witnesses: attached to one section of the mold and hav- ABM. S. HALLMAN,
ing downwardly-extending lips b, and plate CHAS. HURsT.
