CHILDS CARRIAGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,301, dated April 11, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EVELlNE L. CAMPBELL, a citizen of Great Britain, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in a Gonvertible Ohilds Carriage and Cot; and I hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to that class of childrens carriages in which the body of the vehicle is so constructed that it may be ,extended, to provide sufficient length, to serve as a cot in which the child may lie, and may be readily shortened again, to serve as a carriage.

My invention consists in the novel swinging extension frame at the foot of the carriage body, and in the novel construction of the seat providing for a pillow receptacle, as I shall hereinafter fully describe and specifically point out in the claims.

The object of my invention is to provide a childs vehicle which is of simple construction, and which can be readily converted from a carriage into a cot, and vice versa.

Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention,Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my device showing it as a carriage. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section showing it extended whereby it may serve as a cot.

A is a suitable frame with handle a and springs B. Upon the springs is mounted the body 0, which consists of a suitable bottom, a head-board c and sides a. The board D of the extension frame, which forms, when closed, the foot of the body, is hinged to the bottom as shown at d, and from said footboard projects side pieces E, which overlap and lie outside the planes of the sides 0' of the body, when the device is used as a carriage, as is shown in Fig. 1. Both the sides 0 and the sides E are suitably shaped to provide a neat and proper appearance for the foot of the carriage. The foot-board D and sides E are held locked to the body of the vehicle by means of suitable fastenings, here shown as hooks e which engage staples c on W the body bottom. Hinged at f to the top of the foot-board D is a supplementary board F which forms the foot-board of the cot, when the frame is extended.

When the vehicle is used as a carriage, as is shown in Fig. 1, the foot-board F hangs down against the inner face of the foot-board D. When converted into a cot the parts assume the positions shown in Fig. 2. It will be seen that the foot-board D has been turned about its hinge d, so that it lies in a horizontal position and by continuing the bottom of the body, provides the necessary length to permit the child to occupy a recumbent position. The sides E of the foot-board continue the sides 0' of the body; and the supplementary foot-board F occupies a position at right angles to foot-board D and thus forms the foot of the cot, said board F being locked in position by suitable fastenings, here shown as hooks e on the sides E of the extension frame, engaging staples f on the board. The two foot-boards and the sides E thus form a swinging extension frame, which overlaps and completes the foot of the vehicle body, and is out of the way when the device is used as a carriage, and which continues said body and completes the foot thereof when used as a cot.

Within the head portion of the body is a frame consisting of sides 9, and a top G. The top is hinged to the head-board c at g, and when dropped down upon sides 9 as shown in Fig. 1, forms a seat. When lifted and thrown back against the head-board, as shown in Fig. 2, the space between sides g is exposed, and in this space is placed a pillow H.

The conversion from carriage to cot and vice versa is readily and quickly effected, and the construction is simple, durable and not costly.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A convertible childs carriage consisting of a swinging extension frame at the foot of the body, and the seat frame and pillow re-' ceptacle in the head of the body, substantially as herein described.
